Free Music Notes for Johnny HilandFree Music Review: You may have heard of him...But you will! He's amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
Steve Vai's label Favored Nation's latest release of guitarist Johnny Hiland is an excellent mix of country, rock and just plain outstanding guitar playing.
The self-titled debut disc by I'm proud to say, Maine native shows off this gifted players unbelievable skill and playing.
He's backed by bass legend Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpy (Mr. Big) on drums and Bill Holloman on saxaphone and keyboards.
His style is refreshing and is reminiscent of his many influences from Danny Gatton to Eric Johnson.
His fingerpicking style is just unbelievable.
Vai signed this kid from just a recording that was sent to him on his voicemail. That's how good he is.
Check him out. This is not the last you'll hear from him.
Free Music Review: Blown Away Hit: 5 Stars
If you appreciate great guitarist, like I do, then this is a cd you must have.
I had never heard of this guy until I was browsing amazon, and came across this debut album by Johnny Hiland.
I'm more of a Clapton, blues baby boomer, but I like, and appreciate great guitar playing of all types, and there is plenty of that here.
This guy can sound like Eric Johnson at times, and then he will play real county licks that are as good, or better than anything I've ever heard.
When I sampled the tunes online I was intrigued.
After listening the to whole cd I was very impressed, and now after listening to it many times, I find more and more to like about it.
WOW! What a talent.
Free Music Review: Awesome Hit: 5 Stars
I knew I would like this album if the purist country folks didn't. Reading those reviews helped me go ahead and buy the album. I respect country guitar a lot for the technique and heritige. I just can't get past the silly lyrics and horrible vocal accents in most of the songs. Thankfully, Hiland decided to make this one instrumental.
From a "hairhead" to a "redneck": take my advice, and give a listen to some hairheads and you might learn a thing or two. I use country everyday in my playing whether it is obvious to the listener or not. Don't be a typical redneck and have a closed mind... open it and listen to the music around you.
Free Music Review: Mr. Hiland : A New Legend Named Johnny Hit: 5 Stars
If it's one thing Johnny Hiland can teach us all about the guitar, it's the difference between what is amazing, and what is astounding. There is a short list of the truly great players of the instrument, and there is a new list of the truly astounding ones, bearing only one name - Johnny Hiland. This man is simply in a class by himself, mastering both country and rock style. He has created a level of excellence on the guitar the likes of which we have not heard before, and perhaps never will again - he's that good. So, by all means everyone, go out and buy something so rare in musical artistry that it defies comparison.
You'll be glad you did.
Free Music Review: Guitar Hero Hit: 5 Stars
After Johnny Hiland's clinic at the First World Guitar Congress held at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in June 2004, I told Johnny that he'd just replaced Joe Maphis as my personal Guitar Hero. This stuff is fast, clean, inventive, fun, and amazing on CD, but in person it just flows out of the guy. The fun part at the Congress was hearing classical and jazz guitar players (and you'd know their names) coming out of the Green Room saying, "Wow, how do you think Johnny did that last thing he played?" This is his first CD; highly recommended.
