Glad to see I'm not alone in appreciating this album, which was my introduction to Jon without Yes (along with ANIMATION).
To say these songs came from the 1979 Paris sessions isn't exactly right -- some are even older, as evidenced on the expanded TORMATO CD. And they aren't necessarily Yes-type songs -- I expect none of his music was until the other four musicians put in their shares. But SONG OF SEVEN was the first time Jon showed all his strengths outside of Yes - as bandleader, commercial songwriter, arranger, and frontman - and the result is successful on all fronts (and made a blueprint for the even better ANIMATION).
To be fair, some tracks aren't too impressive; Jon's voice is far more convincing on matters ethereal and contemplative than when soul-shouting "I'll always want you by my side / Oh baby / By my side" (with accompanying saxophone). These fluffier tracks are some of the first we hear, but as we progress further into SOS, the music broadens and deepens in complexity and themes. By the end, we've covered rock, R&B, ambient, Celtic, folk-rock, as well as simple pop, culminating in an orchestral suite on the lines of "Awaken".
Is it Yes? By no means, and it's useless to compare. More useful would be its successor ANIMATION, which is similarly structured and similarly varied, and arguably more successful - no doubt as a result of lessons learned here. But SONG OF SEVEN is not to be dismissed in itself: if Jon had made no further solo albums, this would be admitted as pretty good -- better than, say, the Alan Parsons Project (which used several of the same musicians).
