Just read G. Harvey's one-star review. Funny... Miles Davis and Jon Hassell are probably my two biggest musical heroes, even though I'm not particularly enamored with the typical sound of the trumpet. Miles listened to Karlheinz Stockhausen. Hassell actually studied with the German sound wizard. During his electronic freak-out period Miles subjected his trumpet to all manner of technological manipulation and distortion. Hassell has also been accused of electronic gimmickry, but interestingly, on his web site, he has posted the one interlude that his Indian voice teacher ever let him record. Jon is trying to repeat his teacher's phrasing by resonating through the mouthpiece, without even using the body of the trumpet. It is purely the original sound of Jon Hassell, without any electronic manipulation whatsoever. I saw Miles live many times during his electronic period and can say I was simply astounded by the experience... music you've never heard before and will never hear again. Thank you Miles! I saw Hassell perform this latest body of work at UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles. Some season ticket holders didn't get it and walked out. The rest of us sat with our mouths open, witnessing a rare adventure into a sonic territory that was being conjured by modern-day shamen in the cave. There wasn't a sound from the audience for 50 minutes. Then a rousing standing ovation. Thank you Jon! No, this isn't "Jazz Fusion." This is music from a man who started at the conceptional wellspring of Ambient, Minimalism, Electronic and "Fourth-World Music," which he is credited with inventing. In the present moment he is an avatar simultaneously channeling sound from the deep past and distant future... a sonic anthropologist on the frontier of exotic beauty. I am glad that Jon still graces our planet and will probably never get the chance to break his legs in a Ferrari. For those who walk out on this music, perhaps it does sound like "elevator music on valium." I would like to at least think of it as an exploratory submarine adventure on ayuasca. Rave on Jon Hassell!
Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street Poster
American trumpet player and composer returns to ECM with a stand-out album. Jon will tour the US for the first time in more than 20 years in support of this release. Jon is known for his influence in contemporary music and his unusual electronic manipulation of the trumpet sound which has been lauded and imitated by many. He has collaborated with the likes of Brian Eno (who produced his first ECM record, the iconic Power Spot, Peter Gabriel (Scorsese Soundtrack Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ), he co-composed the electronic theme music for the television show The Practice, and still makes guest appearances on many albums (e.g. 2008 Ani DiFranco). The music and Jon s background will provide sizeableopportunities to market the record to a wide audience encompassing lovers of electronic, jazz, and world music.
