Free Music Notes for Romantic AriasFree Music Review: GOOD BUT NOT GREAT Hit: 2 Stars
I saw a video on Youtube of Jonas Kaufmann singing Mozart and I really liked it so I decided to purchase this CD. Unfortunately, this CD was not as good as I thought it would be. He sounds pretty good in the German repertoire. I really liked the WEBER and the WAGNER but the italian selections are a bit hit and miss. In the Italian selections his voice is not really that appealing except in the high notes which sound good. And when he signs piano it sounds really odd. Don't know it just doesn't work for me, maybe he had a bad day while he was recording this. Also, it just might be a voice that sounds better live than in the recording studio. Who knows.
Free Music Review: Wait 15 Years Hit: 2 Stars
Listening to Jonas Kaufmann's debut recital disc, I can't help thinking what a great baritone he'll make sometime in the future. Not that he doesn't have the notes, but this is a heavy, robust voice one rarely associates with the tenor repertory. There's no ping, no lightness in tone, nothing that would make the high notes really soar; instead they're pinched out, fairly strangulated and sometimes off-pitch. There's certainly passion to Kaufmann's singing, and power, but forget poetry. I would agree that he excels in the German pieces here, so perhaps there's more Wagner in his future. Or at least some Germonts and Rodrigos.
Free Music Review: Tenor Arias for Mediocre Baritone Hit: 1 Stars
Some very distinguished tenors started out as baritones. Such was the case with the great Carlo Bergonzi who retained a warm Caruso like baritonal timbre in his voice while still hitting ringing, spinto high B-flats and singing in sweet head voice and mezza voce. Ramón Vinay also began his career as a baritone, becoming a gifted heroic tenor before returning to the baritone repetoire as his voice darkened with age.
Unfortunately, Kaufmann is not cut from the same cloth. With some effort, he could become a useful baritone. But his premature and unjustified desire to enter the tenor range is quite ridiculous, producing a strained, constipated and thoroughly unpleasant sound. And he should learn to shave.
Free Music Review: absolutely terrible Hit: 1 Stars
How these people claim to "love" Kaufmann is beyond me unless they have no taste or musicality, just parrotting what others write. He doesn't sing, he either belts it out (a true "can belto") with no taste, style, or musicality or he croons to beat Vickers. There is no individuality or color to the voice nor sensitivity. If you want to hear a REAL tenor, get these arias sung by Mario del Monaco or Carlo Bergonzi. Don't waste your money here.
