The great Fifties singer Jo Stafford and her husband Paul Weston used to amuse their friends by performing as the irrepressible and awesomely untalented Jonathan and Darlene Edwards. The response was so overwhelming that they cut several albums in these personae. The result may be the funniest bad recordings ever released, Mrs. Miller's inestimable work notwithstanding: Stafford's extremely hopeful demeanour as she casts about as Darlene, trying to find the right note (and almost inevitably failing), is about the most hilarious thing imaginable. Of special note on this brillitant cd is Darlene's performance of "be My Little Bumble Bee" with a very virile all-male choir: the juxtaposition of their confident iterations of the musical phrases with hers is priceless, and by the song's end, when Darlene seems to have become so taken with pretending to be a bee that all she can do is arhythmically "buzz," borders on the sublime.
