Free Music Notes for Jonathan Sings LarsonFree Music Review: Demos from a master Hit: 5 StarsThis album shows how much potential and how much it is a loss that Jonathan Larson isn't here writing more songs. This shows that he had a lot more to do and that Superbia and other shows should have been produced just like Rent was. Each song not only brings out something about the show he was writing, but his own life that was filtering itself into the songs that he was writing. It is brilliant and heartbreaking to see this young writer's vision come true but have him not be here to see it.
Free Music Review: Hit for Mr. Larson Hit: 5 StarsI loved this CD. Although the songs may not be the best work I think the this CD really shows who Jonathan was and what he believed. This is a must have for any RENThead!!!
Free Music Review: Unfortunately Lacking Hit: 2 StarsI don't want to be a hater here but this CD is not great. I am huge fan of Jonathan's song-writing abilities and I've seen RENT over a dozen times in NYC and also got the chance to see tick, tick...boom off-Broadway. I was really anticipating this CD very much since I obviously have the other cast recordings and I was anxious to hear Larson's interpretations of his own work. Sadly, as brilliant as he was a composer, it just didn't carry over vocally. The songs that are unknown--like most composers--are not great. However, I think a compilation album of his work, including the unknown and never-before-heard tunes, would be a great idea and feature some of today's top singers doing their own interpretations (please, no Seasons of Love...it's quickly becoming the "Memory" of the 90s!).
This is indeed a must-have for Rent heads to be sure.
Free Music Review: Jonathan Sings Larson Hit: 5 StarsWhat can you say about a talent that was taken away from us far too soon than he should've been. I first fell in love with Jonathan's musical talents when I purchased my first copy of the Rent soundtrack of the Broadway musical(I say first, because I've worn out a few already) I wasn't quite prepared for hearing Jonathan's voice come out of my headphones at work the first time I listened to this, but when I did, I almost had to excuse myself to the bathroom for a good quick cry. Hearing Jonathan sing just caught me way off guard and it hit me very emotionally. I had made it through the entire cd and had to put the Rent one in and listen to that once again. As usual with the Rent disc, the second disc always makes me well up and shed tears; especially at Angel's death. This cd is: emotional, chilling, beautiful, and a must have for anybody who loves the legacy of work that Jonathan had left behind for all of us to enjoy.
Free Music Review: recommended for fans of Rent and Tick, Tick, Boom Hit: 4 StarsThis recording can be recommended for any fan of Jonathan Larson's music. The demos from RENT are interesting enough, but more than anything it gives the general public a chance to hear previously unreleased songs. Mr Larson's early death meant that he never had a chance to develop his style, but for those who enjoy his sound this will be a welcome addition to their collections.
