Free Music Notes for HejiraFree Music Review: Fantastic record-some of Joni's finest work Hit: 5 Stars
This recording is a true testiment to the artistry and compositional talent of Joni Mitchell. There are few artists who tackle the ever difficult task of developing their unique artistic voice without allowing the pressures of the music industry to influence and change their unique creative voice. Joni Mitchell is a phenomenal song writer with a pure and sweet voice which matches the simplicity and beauty of her compositions, so well that you could barely imagine anyone else remaking her songs successfully. This record is really beautiful, containing the haunting "Amelia" and "Refuge of the Roads", two of my favorite songs of all popular music. I HIGHLY suggest that you buy this CD for your collection. Another excellent CD is "Travelogue", which has newly orchestrated arrangements (by jazz legend Vince Mendoza)of many of her biggest hits.
Free Music Review: One word: Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
While listening to selections from Hejira recently in the acoustically wonderful environment of audiophile headphones, it occurred to me: Nobody will ever do anything this good, ever. It's not likely at least. Hejira is Mitchell's masterpiece (yes, Blue and Court & Spark and arguably others qualify for that description, but Hejira is a work of such remarkable depth, beauty and originality that it even stands above Mitchell's other amazing achievements). How can one describe this work? Impressionistic folk-jazz? Poetry in musical motion? I'm not sure, but now nearly 30 years old, Hejira refuses to sound dated, continues to roll down a mystical highway and comes to rest in only one place -- at the top of the list of great popular music triumphs of the 20th century, and, so far, the 21st. No collection of superior popular music is complete without it.
Free Music Review: The finest work of a prolific artistic genius. Hit: 5 Stars
Her interest in jazz is prominent in this album, but this is not a jazz album, this is purely original Joni Mitchell music. These are striking melodies of haunting beauty, a type of beauty that you can't imagine. Her electric guitar work here transforms the instrument into something never heard before(like the plaintive harp of a beatnik angel). Lyrically, the songs on this album capture the angst of the need for departure and exploration, a Kerouac-type theme, with poetry that will live on by itself for ages. Her sheer poetic artistry is beyond description. Listen to "Amelia":
I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
It was the strings of my guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm . . . .
Free Music Review: Ingenious Joni Hit: 5 Stars
... meanwhile back in '76, a pop/rock year characterized by cocaine stagnation, JM hits on something new - cool futurist blues. She's playing electric guitar and she's chanelling a more desperate muse. Here is the 1st feminine road album.
See that beret? JM's arty, she's poetic - equal parts impulsive and wise. Listen: there's Neil Young blowing twisted downbeat harmonica, Larry Carlton wailing geometric licks and - here's the biggie - Jaco Pastorious oscillating squarewaves straight from outer space.
Mad words, unreal chords - heavenly vocals drenched in nicotine dreams. "Refuge of the Roads" and "Amelia" track the cinematic expanses of the human condition, while "Blue Motel Room" and "Furry Sings The Blues" vivisect the same with cameo clarity.
Every tune is boho, cubist and mysterious.
Free Music Review: Joni Mitchell ~ Hejira Hit: 5 Stars
I remember that I bought this album a few years back, because someone recommended me to listen to Joni Mitchell. I thought the album sounded dull and I gave it away to my brother who loves music from the 70's. After listening and buying other albums from Joni I bought Hejira again, and now it's probably my favourite album from her. I really started listening to the lyrics and in combination with the sparse music, Hejira creates a very poetic travelogue. Joni wrote this album on a car trip through the usa and you can hear that. Most of the songs are about travelling, meeting people on your journey and memories from the past. I took this album with me on my trips to Hungary and Iceland, and it's really a companion on my travels. This album will grow on you after the first listenings and like fine wine, gets better with age. Highly recommended!
