Free Music Notes for Hejira

Free Music Review: UNPRODUCTIVE & DISTRACTED...
Hit: 5 Stars

...that's what happens to me when I listen to this beautifully haunting CD, while trying to write -- or do anything else for that matter -- at the same time. Joni's music commands, demands one's full attention. Her fans know already; I don't have to go into how it all comes together -- lyrically, vocally, instrumentally - spiritually. If all the musical artists in my collection were as emotionally and artistically captivating as Joni, I'd never get any work done. (This isn't gonna be a long review: I'm going to right now put away Hejira, put on some appropriate "background" music -- like Nora Jones or something -- and finish my screenplay.) Enjoy!

I remember hearing "Coyote" on WMMS in Cleveland when it came out. What it was doing there with Led Zeppelin and Steve Miller I have no idea. I'd never been a Joni Mitchell fan, but I did not walk, I ran to the record store to score Hejira. It's easily one of the greatest recorded musical works of all time, just so beautiful.

There's already ample tributes to Joni and Jaco here, so I'll mention this instead -- I never liked Neil Young as a harmonica player that much, I figured "Heart of Gold" was the limits of his abilities. But his playing on "Furry Sings the Blues" will just about bring tears to your eyes.

Free Music Review: Electrically Lovely
Hit: 5 Stars

This may not be as acoustic or spare as the fabulous Blue, but those who find some of Jonis electric/jazzy work difficult need have no fear. Hejira is what all the best Joni albums are, SONGS! These are as strong as almost any of her other work, and the change of pace resulting from electric guitar and fretless bass is welcome. A sample great line: "There's a Gypsy down on Bleeker Street, went in to see her as a kind of joke, she lit a candle for my love life, and fifteen bucks went up in smoke"

Free Music Review: Hejira by Joni Mitchell
Hit: 5 Stars

I have always loved and admired Joni Mitchell's music, her poetry and the depth of her lyrics. She is an artist who has consistently grown and changed throughout her career, always becoming stronger and more interesting, following the influences of jazz greats, while always maintaining her own unique qualities. Hejira is my new favorite album of hers, ordered while I was looking for a few of my other favorites which I only have in vinyl. I would highly recommend it both for the music and the poetry, which is wonderful.Hejira

Free Music Review: Wowee Zowie
Hit: 5 Stars

One of my all time favorites. I never EVER get sick of this disc. There's not a bad tune in the lot. Stand outs for me include "Song For Sharon", "Amelia", and "Coyote", with "Furry.." and Refuge..." close seconds. Although Joni always seems a tad obssessed with the opposite gender, especially on this disc, she isn't afraid to say it- which makes for a very self-reflective, personal, and beautifully crafted piece of work for sure. What a classic- positively masterful and a must-have for anyone who is searching for that all elusive "desert island disc". Pop it on in your car and drive; just wait-you'll understand.
