Free Music Review: Mitchell Meets Mingus.

Mingus ranks among my favorite Joni Mitchell albums (the others being Blue, Court and Spark, and Hejira), and it is one of Joni Mitchell's best albums. Mingus is an experimental collaboration between Mitchell and jazz great, Charles Mingus (1922-1979), who died before the album was released in 1979. Mitchell contributed all of the lyrics and vocals. Mingus composed four of the songs. The album also includes several audio excerpts (labelled "Rap" below) from Sue-Graham Mingus, including an improvisational scat between Mitchell and Mingus. Although it was initially poorly received, today Mingus is considered by many critics as one of the high-water marks of Mitchell's prolific career. Mingus is minimalist jazz with the feel of a smoky jazz club, featuring an impressive list of session musicians: Weather Report's Jaco Pastorius on bass and Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone, and Herbie Hancock on electric piano. (For Shorter and Hancock, Mingus was their first studio work together since recording with the Miles Davis band in the late 60s.) The complete album tracklist includes:
