Free Music Review: Joni's Jazz
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always loved this CD. Joni is at a plateau in her career here, having moved from folky singer/songwriter to Jazz influenced singer. She probably started slipping a bit after this. Her voice here is perfect, and her phrasing is as always truly unique.

Favourite track for me is "In France they Kiss on Main Street". Pat Methany plays wonderful guitar and the band are really powerful. However 'Coyote' 'Hejira' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' are all great in there own ways.

The band is phenomenal, Michael Brecker is on Sax, Jaco Pastorius Bass, together with Lyle Mays on Keyboards and Don Alias on drums. This is a one-off Jazz super-group that only ever worked together for this tour, and never recorded in the studio as a unit.

If you like Joni Mitchell's Jazz side this is an essential purchase and you can buy the DVD of this as well, which is well worth getting.

Free Music Review: Jaco, Jaco, Jaco
Hit: 5 Stars

EVERYONE is great on this record, and I'm a bit of a Pat Metheny fanatic, and he's great here, don't get me wrong. The Deepest Genius on this performance is Jaco Pastorius. MY GOD!!! He reinvents what a bass can do. His playing on "Free Man in Paris" and "In France They Kiss On Main Street" is beyond adjectives. He makes them new and better songs. You just have to listen and FEEL it. Good God. It's so bubbling and propulsive. Okay, I'll stop about Jaco now and go and listen to it some more. R.I.P. Jaco and Michael Brecker.

Great CD on just about every level. But the package I got was just one disc and it was missing a few key songs, including Black Crow and Free Man In Paris. Ouch.

Free Music Review: An All Time Great
Hit: 5 Stars

Nearly 30 years later, this continues to hold as an album on "my all time greats" list. It boggles the mind to think of this ridiculous collection of talent, Jaco, Metheny, Mays, Brecker, Alias, Joni, performing--together!--with such joy and ease. And it all comes through in the recording. Metheny's guitar solo on "In France they Kiss on Main Street" soars and brings a smile to your soul. When you go back to the studio version it just can't compare.

Jaco's bass line to "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" is a real jaw dropper, like some super-natural alien is playing. I mean, hello? Is this for real?

I don't mean to over emphasize the technical, because this album is full of emotional moments too. "Amelia" is a standout. "Hejeira is outstanding. "Pat's Solo" is classic Pat Metheny - very haunting. Perhaps the finest piece on it, however, in spite of all the musical talent, features Joni, alone, at the end minus the band performing an intense "Woodstock." Imploring the audience - demanding - "We've got to get ourselves back to a garden" she gets right to the core and truth of our paths and struggles together.

Shadows and Light is not perfect; there are a few dull spots, such as before the end when it drags a little with "Why do Fools Fall in Love" and "Shadows and Light." It is also inexcusable that Jaco's solo was left off many versions of this CD. But the highlights of this concert soar to such magnificent heights that it cannot be discounted as one of the all time great performances.

Absolutely awesome. Joni Mitchell's voice sounds unbelievable and the cast of musicians is great including jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny.
