Free Music Review: A Work Of Art For The Ages
Hit: 5 Stars

Joni Mitchell has created a work of art for the ages...the ages we live in and will look back on with much nostalgia and regret.
There are artists who try to use their talents and abilities to inform and to educate ...usually with very frustrating results. The masses are like sheep ...following...deaf, dumb and blind...whatever and whoever is the latest flavour.
The sounds of "Shine" come from the artist herself..nearly all instruments are played by Joni...who produced the album..wrote the songs and did all of the vocals herself. No glossy, over-produced product created to appeal to the fickle tastes of the masses.
This is a recording that will NOT appeal to those "sheep" who allow their tastes to be dictated. Just as the lyrics referring to the political leanings of those very "sheep" who allow their political views to be dictated by a "regime" ...a "dictatorship"...a mass media controlled by that "regime" constantly pouring out the propoganda we are all witness to every time we turn on the idiot box or go on the internet.
"Shine" is a kind and gentle reminder of where we all are now...where we have come from and where we are headed if we don't change course NOW, before it's too late, if it's not too late already.
Joni Mitchell has created a beautiful work of art...for the ages...to enjoy...while we can...if we only stop and smell the roses..now.

Free Music Review: A mature Mitchell
Hit: 5 Stars

For those of us who cherished the music of Joni Mitchell over the years it seemed we had reached the end with the release of Both Sides Now in the year 2000. The standards album of non-Mitchell material performed with an evidently terminally eroded voice had a potent tragic quality to it. Add to that a string of albums that reissued new assortments of per-released songs and a heap of tribute albums and the only conclusion one could reach was "end of career".

Then Shine came along. The album is everything that the past several years have left us longing for. Sure Joni's voice does not have the lilting fluidity or range of her early years, but instead it has a poignancy and maturity to it. She displays the veteran actor's mastery of subtle inflection that stirs the soul. The music is as brilliant as ever, her lyric content as relevant. An updated rendition of Big Yellow Taxi takes on a more ominous tone just, as our changing perspective has stirred our consciousness. The album taken as a whole displays an eerie bittersweet character to it reminiscent of other records like Blue yet not resembling it at all. In Shine we are reminded that an artist's career does not ever end. Shine is a dark and mysterious, beautiful and fully mature offering. Shine stands tall among Joni Mitchell's best work. Thank you Joni

Free Music Review: Joni writing from her 5 Stars

Let me begin by saying I've been a Joni fan for decades. Since I was a prepubescent 12 yr. lying in bed listening to my older bros, and sisters albums to, well now......... I'm on my first listen as I type. This album has a very good flow to it with all the songs fitting nicely into one another, and I know I'm going to like it more with each play. It's reminiscent of Paparika Plains with nice orchestration and instrumentation. Chord changes are interesting but not too esoteric for the masses. My only complaint, is the production/engineering aspects of this album. This recording sounds like it was recorded in a makeshift Studio/ Starbucks with an aspiring Starbucks/Crewchief at the controls. Slight distortion at many levels thru the phones (I'm monitoring thru high-quality Sennheiser cans here) I'm just calling it like it is. Reminiscent of my old record player when the needle gathered a little too much dust. At least I could blow on that and all good for awhile. Probably some hotshot(oops starbucks again) Berklee grad helpng out. Surprising to say the least. Otherwise, don't let this stop you from adding this one to your collection, songwriting is King, and Joni is the Queen :)

Free Music Review: Don't be too quick to judge
Hit: 5 Stars

Joni Mitchell has been delivering such original exquisite music for so long, it is easy to see by the reviews that it is a precarious position. My advice? Don't judge this marvelous work too soon, before the layers have been revealed.

At first, the age that has crept into Joni's voice threw me off a bit but it remains a supple, expressive and altogether remarkable instrument. No, the range is not as expansive, but a lifetime of living makes her voice even more expressive and particularly soothing.

This artful CD is a meditation, observations with no malice and an edgy prayer for us all. It is original--except for the reprise of Big Yellow Taxi and its message which seems to have been written for today. The lyrics are the same, but they reach deeper now.

It's beautifully recorded CD. The work is remarkable and easily ranks among her best. It is a recording that unfolds at its own pace and continues to reveal itself even after many playings. While Joni is still Joni, hasn't each record been a snapshot of her evolution?

Shine is both wise and sweet.

Free Music Review: Gosh, what can I say??
Hit: 5 Stars

What can I say that everyone has said already? Its a wonderful CD! I was so excited to have Joni singing again! With all the "greatist hits" stuff coming out,I thought for sure no hope for some GREAT new material. I bought this on the road. Listening to the sax parts, I thought for sure it was Shorter, but it was not. Its veteran Bob Sheppard. He sounds exactly like Shorter. Of course ,my man Larry Klein on bass (Joni's ex). A lot of songs were done by Joni,as she does ,what she does best, branching out into the real world of music. As I was driving I do what I always do when listening to Joni, let it play again and again. Every time I heard something different, remarkable. On some songs has that feel of "Chalk " Cd. But ever refreshing. Her new take on Big Yellow Taxi is great! So I will stop and let you decide how it is. What a remarkable lady.. She creates memories for me everytime, this time doing a roadtrip and stopping in for coffee and seeing her new CD! Please buy this and listen to it many times over, just as we were doing on her other great projects!
