Free Music Review: "Shine" is Hearfelt and Luminous
Hit: 5 Stars

The instrumentation is wonderful and sparse, the words are heartfelt and more serious than most popular music dares to go. Joni Mitchell does not want to ruminate these days on trivial pursuits. Ecology, politics and egoism dominate as themes. Even with the serious nature of her lyrics the music floats and inspires with luminous beauty. Wayne Shorter's saxophone underscores and punctuates her compositions adding to the symbiosis of poetry and music. Joni's dark, sultry voice reaches deep into her own heart and so into the heart of anyone willing to let go and be part of the experience.

"If I Had a Heart" ranks as one of her finest compositions. That, along with "Night of the Iguana" and "If" are themselves worth the price of the album.

I was impressed to see that most of the instrumentation was done by Mitchell and it does not disappoint, but I would love to hear this music live and with a cadre of the fine musicians she is always able to conscript.

I give "Shine" my highest recommendation.

JONI MITCHELL SHINE

It is interesting to compare this album with BLUE, from the somber tones of the artwork (these are two of the few of Joni's albums without her vividly colored artwork on the cover) to the presence of James Taylor's guitar (on the title track). Instead of her umbral visage we have an image of the earth and nameless dancers. Instead of "I'm gonna blow this damn candle out" we have "Oh let your little light shine" The reviewers who complain that the tone of her lyrics here is too didactic have never tried to write a song, certainly not one that rises to her standards. It is great to hear her on piano again, and her guitar playing is wonderful. Brian Blade on drums adds a lot to the vibe of the songs he plays on. My only quibble is with the electronic sounds. It says much more to me about what to hope for in humanity to hear musicians like Joni and Brian and James play together than any gloss you could put on it.

Free Music Review: Joni's epic path
Hit: 5 Stars

To hear the truth again is sweet! The title cut has great harmonics and a peacefulness to it ... even more relaxing than "Bar and Grill". "This Place" begins "Sparkle on the ocean, Eagle at the top of a tree" with Joni's voice sounding awesome. Pedal steel by Greg Leisz is welcome too and reminds me of the Blue album. "Play what you want!", someone from the audience said. "All riiiight", Joni replied. Now Joni's thoughts make more sence as we know so much more in popular media (Inconvenient Truth, A New Earth ....) about "crop rotation" and life on our planet. "Let your little light shine", .... Google 'The Fiddle and the Drum' for more ....From "Ladies of the Canyon" on the side door of a red VW Beatle in college to this terrific album seems like a short time, along with "The Fiddle and the Drum" Alberta Ballet, and Joni's "Green Flag Song" triptych art exhibits, "Shine" is an awesome start at comprehending changes to come.

Free Music Review: I love the music of Joni Mitchell
Hit: 5 Stars

Joni Mitchell is such a talented song writer and musical arranger. This disc is proof of that. "One Night Last Summer" is a goregous instrumental track. I love the saxophone playing by Bob Sheppard on this track and throughout this disc. The piano playing is beautiful on this track too. Joni includes a new version of her classic tune "Big Yellow Taxi". I also liked the track "This Place". These are two songs about protecting the enviroment. "Hana" is another highlight on this disc. This groovy song is a tribute to hard working people. This song is also a reminder not to give up when times are tough. "If" is a song that reminds us to be patient with ourselves and other people. Joni expresses her anti war feelings on the tracks "If I Had A Heart" and "Strong And Wrong" These songs are very touching and thought provoking. I really enjoyed listening to this album.

I am in awe. I am grateful. I am listening only my second time through now. But it is a marvelous album, absolutely soulful, warm, deep. I feel spoken to and with. Of course I have long admired Joni Mitchell's brilliant music. But right now to be here with her comments on our world-particularly the song Shine-feels very good. She makes connection. Music (or all arts) at its best is that connection. I sobbed during Shine. The collective mourning, and yet the joyful parts in all of it. To feel touched, to feel surprised, to feel 'yes, that's just how I feel too', and it doesn't make the state of the world any less heartbreaking, but it's helpful, and affirming. The album is soothing but not lulling, and I don't believe now is a good time to be dulled and lulled by music or any other thing. I would recommend this to anyone. I only wish it was longer.
