Free Music Notes for CloserFree Music Review: A stunning second album Hit: 5 Stars
I was first exposed to Josh Groban on the last season of "Ally McBeal" when Josh made a second guest appearance on the (terrible) series. His character's mother had died. He lost his desire to sing while his father was pushing him to perform solo at his church. Hearing Josh's voice was like manna from heaven. He had a spectacular voice. I was surprised to hear a voice coming from a man as young as Josh was at the time which was roughly around 19, 20 years ago. I have been waiting to buy Josh's sophomore album and I finally had the money to buy it which I did. "Closer" is definitely an improvement over his self-titled debut album. On "Closer", Josh avoids the cheesy ballads that peppered his debut album. As cheesy as "You Raise Me Up" is lyrically, the song is still a beautiful song. Josh puts his heart and soul into the song. I know I have heard "You Raise Me Up" somewhere but I just can't put my finger on who I heard it sing it before Josh Groban. I just found out not too long ago that "You Raise Me Up" is on Secret Garden's "Once in a Red Moon" from last year. I thought Josh did a much better version. I was incredibly moved by the passion that Josh put into all of the songs but in particular "Mi Mancherai" (my personal favorite song) from the film "il postino" and "My Confession". Unlike his peers, Josh does not need flash and glitter to prove that he is passionate about his music. His incredible voice speaks volumes that he is the consumate artist. I have been listening to "Closer" non stop since I bought it. I can't wait to hear more music from Josh in the future.
Free Music Review: Classical Pop Has Never Sounded So Good... Hit: 5 Stars
Josh Groban brings fans to the classical pop genre including myself. I have never been a huge fan of classical pop, but Josh made it sound great for me. His voice is powerful and will hook you from the very first track. The background music behind Groban just enhances his vocals ever more beautifully and also hooks you to his songs. He holds a poppish tint to his music to bring in young and old fans alike to his album, and yet he brings a touch of classical to the music as well. I find myself liking this blend of music very well on this album. I couldn't have a whole collection of classical music, but Josh Groban's album Closer is indeed one I love owning. He brings a unique touch to my collection and I still find myself hearing this c.d. all the time.
There are a few songs on here that dull to the power of his other songs, but Josh makes it hard, with his beautiful voice, to hate any of the songs. Yet his more stronger songs I always find myself hiting the repeat button on are Oceano, My Confession, Mi Mancherai, Si Volvieras A Mi, When You Say You Love Me, Remember When It Rained, and of course You Raise Me Up. They are for me his greatest songs on Closer.
Many complain that a lot of his songs are non- English, but I find those songs to be just as beautiful and strong as the English tracks. He brings beauty to more than one language and I love it. I think Josh has great range and I would certainly enjoy hearing more from him. I would give a solid four stars for his songs, and five stars for his voice. I highly recommend this album.
Free Music Review: Heaven on Earth Hit: 5 Stars
After begging and begging for months, I finally received Josh's album "Closer" for my birthday. I was not disappointed. In fact, his cd hasn't left my cd player since I first put it in. Right away, I knew I was in for a treat. The first track, "Oceano" took my breath away and made me cry. It is sung with such passion, such emotion, and through the depths of his rich baritone chords comes a longing not capable of being expressed by any other than Josh Groban's voice. He is rich, enchanting, melodic, and romantic in the songs "Mi Mancherai," "Si Volvieras a Mi," and "Remember When it Rained". I honestly can't choose a favorite, because they are all sung with such feeling and passion. I have never heard a voice like this, and I have listened to many an "artist" who thinks they can sing. None surpasses the gloriousness and passion of this man's voice. It truly does feel like heaven on earth. If you can, I highly recommend getting the Limited Edition version of the "Closer" cd. It has two bonus tracks (4 if you buy the Internet Only version) that are well worth the extra money, as well as a 20 minute "behind the scenes" DVD showing footage of different photo shoots and some questions and interviews. It also lets you see a little more into Josh's charming personality and proves that he is not a fake or pop star clone. This guy is original, one-of-a-kind, and I know he will be in the music scene for many years to come. I am forever a Grobanite and I love you Josh!!!
Free Music Review: Uplifting and refreshingly beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
I admit I am a recent Grobanite and am enchanted with Josh Groban's music. CLOSER reaches deeper, higher, further into my heart than any male classical-pop vocal album. It is classically constructed, arranged and performed, beginning with OCEANO, a gorgeous high impact Italian opening and then moves adventurously through each song-compositions with intelligence, beauty and grace.I can only say how fortunate I am to be living at this time in history to experience such great and grand music. In CLOSER, Josh sings in 4 languages, Italian, English, Spanish and French. He is the first singer I have ever experienced to make Enlgish sound like A ROMANCE LANGUAGE. To be a humble master at such a young age, and with one of the most beautiful and memorable voices, is a great blessing. Josh Groban blesses us with a repertoire of masterful songs with some elegant high points such as YOU RAISE ME UP, PAR TE, REMEMBER WHEN IT RAINS, and more that is unforgettably inspiring and galvanizing to my spirit. Every song is perfection. Out of this world beautiful. It takes several hearings (like all great music) to infuse the songs within the heart. Each one reveals mastery and such great beauty. The orchestrations are A+++ and provide a sonic atmosphere for Josh's God-given voice to take off and sing to the heavens. This is mastery, the Italian songs bring tears, in fact the whole album brings one to tears. It is one of the finest collections of songs I have ever heard. Congratulations to all who made this album and especially to Josh Groban.
Free Music Review: an artistic leap forward Hit: 5 Stars
When compared to Josh Groban's first CD, there is so much more artistry and maturity in this recording, with more depth to his voice, and sincerity of emotion. This is a truly beautiful offering, much in the same vein as the Andrea Bocelli discs, with glorious melodies and romantic lyrics.
'Mi Mancherai' from the film 'Il Postino', features Joshua Bell on violin, and in 'Remember the Rain' we get to hear Josh on piano for the first time in a recording, in a song he co-wrote. He also had a hand in 'Per Te', and 'Never Let Go', which he sings with Deep Forest. 'You Raise Me Up' was a # 1 hit and in the charts for months, as well as this album, which has gone multi-platinum.
Working once again with David Foster, there are lush arrangements and excellent musicianship, and Josh's gorgeous voice with its power and huge range will delight anyone who likes the 'opera light' type of music. For his youth, Josh is remarkable, and one can only imagine the career that lies ahead of him, as a charismatic performer and marvelous singer, and a young man with a style and look all his own.
Favorites include 'My Confession', and I never tire of hearing Lucio Dalla's 'Caruso', no matter who is singing it, and Josh's interpretation is wonderful, and one of the best.
Five songs are sung in Italian, one in Spanish and one in French, all well enough enunciated so that I find them understandable.
The booklet insert has the lyrics in their original languages, and some nice photography, and total playing time is 59'02.
