Free Music Review: stars!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first became addicted to Josh Groban's voice when he released his first album. After this one they may have to put me in rehab! ;) Each and every song on this album is experatly crafted and (most importantly) sung with powerful emotion by a beautiful voice. From the first track "Oceano" to the last track "Never let Go," I was spellbound. Each and every song is amazing. Some of my personal favorites include: "When you say you love me," (really how could you NOT love that song?), "per te" (i had no idea what the words meant but I was moved to tears neverless), "broken vow" (bitter sweet and moving), "remember when it rained" (probably my favorite-Josh wrote, sung and played the piano for this song...ah a man of many talents!) "you raise me up" (I cried over the super-bowl appearance), and of course the opening and closing songs with all other in between. I love this CD and know that anyone who listens to it will too.

Btw- anyone who wants to know translations to josh's lyrics (from both albums) can easily search on a search engine such as google for josh groban lyric translations and tons of sites will pop up with what you want. (i do recomend that you listen to the song first, otherwise you'll be mentally translating the lyrics into english in your head without hearing the song.)

Free Music Review: Pure, strong music sung by a divine voice
Hit: 5 Stars

Overall, this is an amazing CD by an amazing artist. Josh Groban is unlike any other singer in the music world today (save maybe Celine Dion) because he has a freakishly amazing, absolutely divine voice. His music, like his voice, is smooth and pure yet strong and incredibly inspirational. This CD, like the first, contains a few ballads, a few adult rock/pop songs, and a few songs that are simply impossible to classify but wonderful to listen to. This CD showcased his vocal talent beautifully and the songs were powerful and inspirational. I particularly enjoy "Oceano" and "My Confession" since those songs showcase his voice nicely but also have a unique feel (as opposed to a few of his ballads such as "Broken Vow" and "You Raise Me Up"). Also noteworthy is "Il Postino (Mi Mancherai)" because of the incredible violin accompaniment. The only thing this CD lacks is a song in which everything really clicks - the lyrics, the music, and the voice - like was in "Canto alla vida" and "Alla luca del sole" from his first CD. Those are still my two favourite songs of his and I was mildly disappointed I didn't find a song that I liked better than those two on this CD. Still, the bottom line is that this CD is full of incredibly beautiful music sung by an unbelievably talented and powerful singer.

Free Music Review: Josh Groban IS good taste in music!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is in response to pissedhobbit2's review below. Here we have another SNOB with NO ear for music trying to tell the American public what is good taste in music and what is not. You are another one of those jerks who listen to classical music and think that anyone who buys something NOT in the classical music bin has no taste! YOU are the type of person that gives the classical music community a BAD REPUTATION. If you think that "virtually all the contestants on American Idol, Star Search" can sing, then you need to go get your ears checked!! Josh Groban is the MOST incredible vocal talent to come along in DECADES--he blows everyone else out of the water!! And YES, I am a fan of classical music AND I HAVE listened to Bryn Terfel--again, you DEFINITELY need to get your ears checked if you think he is a great singer. He's mediocre at best. Actually, he sounds like he's singing with a stopped-up nose: he has a very nasal sound. Josh, on the other hand, has a pure and beautiful tone to his voice--like no other I have EVER heard in my life!! And he sings with such passion. How you can call his music 'insipid' is beyond my understanding. Actually, I think that you haven't even LISTENED to the CD. So why don't you do yourself a favor and go listen to Closer--and then maybe YOU can develop some good taste in music!!

Free Music Review: I'm a guy and I like Josh Groban. How odd is that?
Hit: 5 Stars

Josh Groban can't seem to take a falty step, can he? I was introduced to Josh Groban by a friend of mine (yes, it was a girl!) during the PBS concert. I was a little shocked. Here was a guy my age that was singing with full orchestras. Not normal. Yet, he was also very good at it. I listened to his first CD, sought out some b-sides, and so on and came to really enjoy his talent. Then Closer came out. I really didn't think he could surpass himself, but surpass himself he did. Closer was a step up. On first listen we find that his music accompaniment is tighter and a little more diverse. We also get a French song. Many other things get upgraded but the thing that remains the same is Josh's overpowering ability to capture the mood of each song, adding just the right dynamics to each mood, whether he be singing in English, Spanish, Italian, or French. Also, pending further listens, you seem to start to understand the messages being conveyed in said foreign songs. Not necessarily the words, but the over-all message. Amazing. Regardless of what music you listen to, Josh Groban should be added to your collection because he is music. Dynamics, variations, ballads, moods, etc... A close study only helps you appreciate the music you love more, whatever music it may be (heck, I listen to punk!).

Free Music Review: Something for everyone
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to admit, I was slightly nervous about the second album. I thoroughly enjoyed the first, so I didn't want the formula to change too much. Closer seems to have the best of both worlds, taking points from the old album that work, but combining new flavor. For instance, the first track, Oceano, contains the raw power that Alla Luce Del Sole has. However, the track has more of a Latin rhythm, and the Italian pronnunciation has improved. A wonderful first track. Another innovative listen is Remember when it rained, a track that Josh played piano on, co-wrote the music, and wrote the lyrics. His piano style is substantially different from David Foster ( David favors arpeggios, Josh plays straight cords more) His instrumental bridge is reminiscent of Eric Carmen's "all by myself" bridge, which was covered by Celine Dion, another of Foster's songs. This song features lyrics that are more raw than the English songs on the first album, and the message and delivery combine to bring an emotional song to life. These are just two examples of the wonderful songs included in Closer. The wide range of style and scoring provides a song for everyone.
