Free Music Notes for NoelFree Music Review: Not what I expected - but still great! Hit: 5 Stars
After hearing "O Holy Night" and "I'll be Home for Christmas" last year, I was disappointed that he didn't have a Christmas album out. So naturally when I saw "NOEL" had been released, I had to purchase it.
As always, Josh is spectacular. But being a bit old fashioned I had hoped the music would be straight forward traditional, like his "O Holy Night" and the original "I'll be Home for Christmas". Josh has such a strong, clear, beautiful voice that can carry with little background accompaniment. But instead of emphasizing the beauty of this man's voice, many of the arrangements have him competing with the overly loud instrumental/chorus accompaniments.
I would have much rather had "O Holy Night" on this CD than "The First Noel" duet with Faith Hill. As a stand alone artist Faith Hill is okay. But to pair her with Josh was a mistake. Next to him she sounds like a coyote howling in the background and is only another noisy distraction.
Overall - I still have to give this five stars because it is a beautiful CD that I will listen to over and over again (yep...8 times already). I hope he puts out another one next year...but finds someone other than David Foster to arrange and produce it.
Free Music Review: Just plain perfect! Hit: 5 Stars
Noel is simply one of the best holiday CD's I've heard. Silent Night -- just beautiful. Little Drummer Boy -- Best version I've heard with Josh's voice along and guitarist Andy McKee. I'll Be Home For Chirstmas -- Addition of messages from troops overseas makes it a definite keeper. Ave Maria -- Another beautiful song! Angels We Have Heard On High -- Voices of Josh and Brian McKnight blend perfectly and the choir just makes it more special. Thankful -- another keeper. The Christmas Song -- Wonderful version of Nat King Cole standard. What Child Is This -- Love it. The First Noel -- Josh and Faith Hill and choir. Petit Papa Noel -- What a gorgeous French song! It Came Upon A Midinight Clear -- Great version with Josh and choir (was never very fond of this one, but now can't listen to it and enjoy it enough). Panis Angelicus -- Mr Goban should sing more Latin songs (wonderful)!. O Come All Ye Faithful -- Perfect ending to a perfec hoiiday CD (Mormon Tabernacle Choir)!
Everything is just delightful (voices, music, orchestration, musicians, choir) -- This CD will be in my car, CD player, computer during the holidays and rest of year!
Free Music Review: Christmas with Groban Hit: 5 Stars
I am a devout Grobanite, and I'm so excited about this album. It delivers on so many levels. If you love Josh's classic, romantic style that he so often portrayed in "Closer", then you'll love Silent Night, Petit Papa Noel, Ave Maria, and O Come All Ye Faithful. My favorites are Little Drummer Boy for its almost celtic, adventurous feel; I'll Be Home for Christmas because in its clips of touching messages from soldiers to their families, it helps us to look beyond ourselves at Christmas and think of others who are going through a hard time: The Christmas Song is my favorite holiday song of all time and it seems like it was written for Josh; Thankful isn't 5 star, but it's a new song and it captures the spirit we all should have in us around the holidays; The First Noel is suprising with this unorthodox rendition featuring Faith Hill and a gospel choir; and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear for its incredible arrangement. Even though I never really liked this song, in the first few seconds you can tell its a keeper.
So, by skillfully weaving traditional with new, Josh creates a beautiful album that belongs in every Chrismas music lover's collection.
Free Music Review: A Josh Groban Christmas Hit: 5 Stars
I am really particularly fussy when it comes to buying Christmas albums. I find a lot of Christmas albums by popular artists rather uninspiring and often maudlin. I recently acquired a copy of Josh Groban's AWAKE cd. I have always wanted Josh to put out a Christmas album and now he has finally done that. The wait was worth it. The combination of his deep, warm baritone voice and beautiful melodies quickly reminded me why I love Josh's music. After being disappointed with his last studio album AWAKE, I was afraid of being disappointed with NOEL. Thankfully I was not. Josh's renditions of "Panis Angelicus", "O Come All Ye Faithful", and "Ava Maria" really took my breathe away. The only flaw on this album was doing duets with Faith Hill and Brian McKnight whose voices took away the majestic beauty of the music and was fairly distracting to this listener. I did like Josh's duet with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Regardless of Faith Hill and Brian McKnight's unnecessary presence on the album, I was pleased to hear Josh back in fine form after his tepid AWAKE album. NOEL will be great to listen to when I will be opening presents on Christmas day.
Free Music Review: Noel is AMAZING beyond words!!!! (Grobanite's Review) Hit: 5 Stars
I bought my version of Noel at Target actually, but I'm always happy to share my views on Amazon.
Well, Josh did it again!!!! His voice continues to personify power, elegance, and grace in such a fantastic way! His voice is maturing beautifully, I could really tell in listening to the higher pitched pieces like Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus. He blew me away yet again with that powerful vocal of his!
Every song, from Silent Night to O Come All Ye Faithful was powerful and beautiul. The guest artists, guitarist Andy McKee, Faith Hill, and Brian McKnight all complemented him very nicely. I especially liked Faith and Josh together. Two very powerful voices!
When I found out he was FINALLY going to do a Christmas album, naturally, I got very excited and ideas formulated in my mind on what he should do. A couple songs popped in there that he actually did: Ave Maria, What Child is This, and the Christmas Song. He did such a great job on all the songs!
This album jumpstarted my Christmas season in a great way. Congratulations Josh on a job well-done! I LOVE NOEL!
