Free Music Notes for Ladies in Lavender [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]Free Music Review: Soundtrack of exceptional beauty and sensitivity: "Lavender", Hess and Bell Hit: 5 Stars
Soundtracks that are exceptional are ones that set the mood of the film and stay as a supporting player to undergird the acting and cinematography. The truly exceptional soundtrack is one that when the film is stripped away, the music survives on its own AS pure music.Such is the case of Nigel Hess' romantic and endearing "Ladies in Lavender".The compositions are so intensely emotional and so beautifully interpreted by violinist Joshua Bell that when listening to it one can easily remember the film and the sisters played by Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. The opening track entitled 'Ladies in Lavender' starts you right off into a musical language reminiscent of the great romantic composers. The fact that Jules Massenet's "Thais Meditation" is included on this cd along with Claude Debussy's "Afternoon of a Fawn" shows the influence these composers likely had on Nigel Hess. This is a CD of rare beauty that continually flows in lyrical magnificence. This is a highly recommended purchase.

Free Music Review: Overlooked little gem - Ladies in Lavender (film, CD) Hit: 5 Stars
Despite the awful title, "Ladies in Lavendar" isn't just for little old ladies in lavender. Knowing that Judi Dench and Maggie Smith perform in the title roles should be enough to pique your curiosity about the film. Two sisters, both single and living together on the English coast pre-World War II, discover a young Polish-Jewish violinist who washes up onshore. As he is nursed back to health, one sister (guess which actress?) develops a particularly strong attachment to him to the dismay of the other. The young man has his own ideas about who to love. This is a poignant story of lost dreams and coming to terms with loss. Maggie and Judi are a pleasure to watch as usual, and the hunkie young man they rescue and who lives with them joins the "Who's that actor? Wonder if he's in other films?" category. (Answer: Daniel Bruhl, seen in GoodBye Lenin!)The music in the film is sensational, with solos provided by violinist Joshua Bell. (Available on CD.)
Free Music Review: Joshua Bell Hit: 5 Stars
After nearly a lifetime of not particularly enjoying violin music, after hearing Joshua Bell's playing on the soundtrack of Ladies in Lavender, I've come to appreciate violin music, and can now also recognise the different kinds of violin I hear. Some wonderful compositions on this CD - Good on you Nigel Hess. This is a most valuable and loved addition to my CD library. Thanks Joshua for your sensitive playing. Gwen
Free Music Review: Exquisite Hit: 5 Stars
This film is wonderful and the soundtrack will take your breath away. I purchased it mainly because I love the finale piece in the movie entitled "Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra" Nigel Hesse and Joshua Bell's collaboration has produced a glorious soundtrack that highlights Joshua's immense talent with the violin and Hesse's brilliance as a composer. I can truthfully say this is the best soundtrack in my collection.
Free Music Review: Ladies In Lavender Hit: 5 Stars
Incredible! Joshua Bell is simply wonderful. The music is soothing yet inspiring. Every note is alive with a special gladness and depth of feeling, but with none of the over-sentimental qualities often found in this type of music. The theme "Ladies in Lavender" is my favorite." I highly recommend this cd to anyone wishing to find a brief respite from the ordinary. M.B. Litchfield, CT USA
