Free Music Notes for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along BlogFree Music Review: So That's, You Know, Coming Along Hit: 5 Stars
Where can I possibly begin? This soundtrack to Joss Whedon's triumphant web-series success is some of the best music my CD player has had the luxury to pump through its speakers. The writing, while classically Joss, points to the fact that his whole bloody family seems to possess the talent to create wildly entertaining media. (And as it turns out, the need to make everything "really sad".) It is funny, clever, and sometimes pointed, going beyond its comic surface to comment on the condition of America and the way society behaves. However, as all Whedon stories must, the story takes a tragic turn, which is likewise portrayed in the music. Speaking of which, the brilliant tale of Billy's transformation from well-intended laundry buddy to villainous Dr. Horrible is expressed clearly in the tone of the songs, spelling out Billy's emotion through lyric and melody.
This brings me to the voices. Neil Patrick Harris' voice is strong and shows magnificent range (and gives me goosebumps on a regular basis). Nathan Fillion's voice, surprisingly so, carries very well and fits perfectly the character he portrays. Felicia Day's Penny is appropriately sweet and mournful and serves as a good balance to both Neil and Nathan. Furthermore, the inclusion of Joss and his brothers in the soundtrack makes fans like me do an extremely happy dance.
My only lamentation is that NPH's adorable mumbles in "Laundry Day" are not included, and that Nathan's "WHY" outburst after "Slipping" doesn't have its own track. But that's being nit-picky.
I am doing my part to spread the ingenious creation to all I can reach by informing people of it when I can, playing the DVD in front of them when I am able, and constantly blaring the music out of my car windows at stop lights. So I ask you to do your part as well: if you love this musical as much as I, annoy some friends and badger perfect strangers through song with the morally ambiguous tale of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
Free Music Review: Far from a "Horrible" CD ... Hit: 5 Stars
If you're looking at this CD, you've undoubtedly already watched "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" either on the interent or on DVD, and loved it. (If you haven't, you really need to ... particularly before buying a CD from it! :-) ) As you know, "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is a short musical comedy/drama about an aspiring super-villain who blogs and sings. This CD contains the songs and instrumental themes from the DVD.
The CD itself is fairly short for a musical CD ... only around 24 minutes ... but that is to be expected as the entire show/movie itself was only 43 minutes long. To me, all of the songs are "winners" ... there's not a bad one among them. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a muscial CD as much as this one. It has catchy tunes, clever wording, good harmonies ... just about everything you could want in a good song. And as a bonus, the CD's liner notes contain the lyrics for all of the songs.
I recently got back from a long car trip, and I listened to this CD multiple times. I remain as impressed now with the songs and how well they fit both the musical and how they stand alone as good tunes as the first time I heard them.
Bottom line ... if you enjoyed the watching "Dr Horrible", you'll enjoy listening to this CD just as much.
Free Music Review: FUN! Hit: 5 Stars
Fun I think is how I could sum up this soundtrack in one word! It's currently all I'm listening to!
Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day have beautiful voices and really bring the musical to life!
"Doctor Horrible's Sing Along Blog" CD is a soundtrack to Joss Whedon's brilliant musical that is on DVD by the same name :D It's about a villian, Doctor Horrible, who is trying to get into the evil league (and take over the world if he can) while trying to win the heart of Penny. This gets complicated when Penny starts to date Captain Hammer, Doctor Horrible's archenemy.
My favorite song on this is "My Freeze Ray," which after watching it I hadn't recognized the title and then when I listened to it, I was like "oh yeah..." and was even more impressed by Joss Whedon's brilliance in putting this together and bring it to DVD and CD!
Though this wasn't like a big publicized and put into theatres everywhere kind of thing, the production of both the DVD and CD are amazing! It is clear and beautiful and really captures the talented singing well!
I would definitely recommend this for a friend!
Free Music Review: Blog is Delicious! Hit: 5 Stars
My kids asked me to watch this when it was a video-blog on the internet, then they got the DVD from the library and asked me to watch it again. This time I did, and I was surprised that a 53-year-old woman could laugh and enjoy something like the kids enjoy. I have loved Joss Whedon's work with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," especially the musical episode (sing for me, Spike!), and never having seen Nathan Fillion perform before just proved to me how limited my viewing habits were. You WILL enjoy this DVD, and if you can get the CD, grab it. You'll find the songs are enjoyable, and when you reach the end of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, if you don't cry, you're not human. Thanks, Joss...I love it and give it five stars.
Free Music Review: Now Sing-Along with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Anywhere Hit: 5 Stars
If you like the movie (/show), than you will like this. If you like other Joss Whedon work, than you need to check this show out (at the least).
It's all the music in the entire series (including intro and exit instrumental's). It's a little pricey as it's all the shows 14 songs, but half are shy of 2 min (quick songs). However, it was 100% independently written, performed and funded (mostly by Joss Whedon's family and friends). In those regards, you can consider this actually pretty well done and profits pretty much going to only them. There's not much more to say.
In the end, those who are fairly big fans, or something more, of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will definitely want to have this.
