Free Music Notes for Greatest HitsFree Music Review: music that can still pack a punch Hit: 5 Stars
Journey's Greatest Hits album has a lot of their awesome music to offer to their fans. Journey enjoyed great success in their heyday with their pop music, soft rock and more; and albums like this show us why they had what it takes to be famous--their music is terrific. Steve Perry's vocals and his songwriting skill are second to none, too. Although this is definitely not the most comprehensive "greatest hits" album out there, it still is strong with all these tunes on it. The quality of the sound is excellent and I really like the artwork.
"Only the Young" starts the CD with Journey doing this one up right--the electric guitars are used very well; they sing and play this to perfection and I love it! Of course, "Don't Stop Believin'" was one of their biggest hits ever; I could never tire of hearing Journey doing this song. "Don't Stop Believin'" has a strong piano arrangement and Journey pulls this off with a hitch! They could make it all look so easy; but we know it really wasn't all that easy; Journey's talent carried them through. In addition, "Faithfully" was another of their biggest hits; this passionate song gets the royal treatment from Journey and they perform this without a single superfluous note! "Faithfully" is indeed a major highlight of this album.
"I'll Be Alright without You" is quite powerful; those guitars and the percussion make this sound so good and again Journey does this flawlessly. "Any Way You Want It" rocks and I love every minute of this tune! "Any Way You Want It" is easily another major highlight of this album and the backup vocals enhance the number well. Listen also for "Ask the Lonely;" Journey does "Ask the Lonely" really well. This is an outstanding example of a type of rock that only Journey could do. "Who's Crying Now" is soft rock at its very best; again Journey does great justice to this rockin' love ballad. The piano arrangement is strong and that percussion enhances the music which fits perfectly with the vocals for "Who's Crying Now."
"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is another tune I love when Journey performs it; they do this faultlessly and I'm very impressed. "Lights" is more classic rock and Journey digs deep into this tune to make it memorable. "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" reverts to soft rock and it all holds its own very well. "Open Arms" is more soft rock and I'm sure you'll like this tune if you like soft rock and you haven't heard this one before.
"Send Her My Love" just plain sounds good; and the CD ends strong with Journey performing "Be Good to Yourself." "Be Good to Yourself" has some pretty fine rockin' and that's excellent. It leaves me wanting more, too.
If you're like me and you do want more after you hear all this, check out other compilations including the two CD set entitled The Essential Journey. Obviously, Journey is one rock band that time will not forget; and that's awesome. While diehard fans will probably have most if not all of these songs in their collections already, this is an especially good album for people just discovering Journey. In addition, casual fans who just want some of Journey's best hits without spending more money for their other CDs should consider this album, too.
Free Music Review: It's the Journey, not the destination Hit: 5 Stars
Once Steve Perry joined Journey for the "Infinity" album, the band's course was inevitably reset. They changed direction from being a progressive rock band to an arena rock juggernaut. Perry's main contribution was a strong melodic sense coupled to his more soulful vocals. The hits started almost immediately, as "Lights" and "Wheel In The Sky" became FM Rock Radio staples.
That is what this greatest hits focuses on, the songs that became the standards by which the public remembers the band. If you were interested in the albums BEFORE "Infinity," I suggest "Time 3," which adds material from the years when Neal Schon was still aping his jazz-Rock tenure with Santana and Gregg Rollie was doing standard rock keyboard boogie. Personally, I liked them better when Perry got on board. The sound focused and the songwriting tightened. Songs like "Separate Ways/Worlds Apart" and "Any Way You Want It" could add a jolt of adrenaline to a day of radio. When Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rollie on "Escape," Journey took on a romantic bent from Cain's songwriting. "Open Arms" came first, then "Faithfully" (on "Frontiers") solidified it. These were pop radio songs without peer, and they make Journey's "Greatest Hits" an essential document of 70's and 80's radio rock. (The updated version includes the best song from the 90's reunion "Trial by Fire," "When You Love A Woman.")
The other reason you might be looking at this is not because of Steve Perry's voice or Neal Schon's guitar heroics, but because of Tony and Carmella. It was Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" that echoed out of the final minutes of "The Sopranos" closing episode. It was funny that Tony passed over Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra for Journey and inspire a million parodies in the process. (Including Hilary Clinton...where the best moment is when she and President Bill Clinton are flipping through songs and Bill says "My money's on Smash Mouth...") Talk about cementing your place in pop culture...who could have asked for better?
This best of offers a pair of soundtrack rarities in "Only The Young" (from "Vision Quest") and "Ask The Lonely" (from "Two of a Kind"). Missing are a few crucial singles like "Suzanne," "Stone In Love" and "Walks Like A Lady." If you really want them, go for the box sets or individual CD's.
Free Music Review: Some of the BEST stuff from one of the BEST bands of ANY decade Hit: 5 Stars
While critics will debate forever the impact of Journey on the world of music, for us fans, there IS no debate...the band rocks and we love 'em and their music--for the most part--will be timeless. I've been in radio for the better part of 20 years now, and I cannot remember a time when I did not receive regular requests for Journey, both then and now. Why? I suppose every person must ask themselves why Journey *works* for you, but for me? I just love a song with a great hook, and Journey is definitely in no short supply of those.
I have noticed that even some Fans have been critical of why some songs were included why others were omitted...and for the most part, I agree--but we have to temper that with the fact that Journey more than likely had ZERO choice in which songs were included on this particular collection. However, whether or not your personal fav was left out or not, there is little doubt that the songs that ARE included, really are great. Personally my two all-time favorite Journey songs have Steve Perry singing back-up...and of course were NOT included.
If for any reason you want a more thorough Greatest Hits collection from Journey, I recommend purchasing their Time 3 Anthology...it represents the larger scope of Journey from before Steve joined to their all-time greatest hits, some a little less popular tracks as well as even some demo versions...all in all a more complete collection. Course, with that said, if you consider yourself a serious Journey fan, you really ought to buy their individual CD's and get the absolute FULL representation of all their hits as well as the more obscure, and sometimes truly magnificent songs that never saw any exposure on the radio (much to my dismay).
Free Music Review: Rare perfect greatest hits albums Hit: 5 Stars
Journey at their best. Journey is much more enjoyable to listen to on a single disk compilation. There is a good mix of Classic Rock and Soft Rock songs to keep it interesting.
There are many greatest hits albums out there that will try to fit as many songs on the CD as possible and try to arrange the songs by year. Though I appreciate this with some artists there are some groups where some of their best material was early in their career and their creativity started to wain a bit which makes the last few tracks on most comps a little exhaustive. This collection avoids this problem because it is almost arranged like a concert where the rock songs and the soft songs are placed to compliment each other. All of the classic Journey songs that still get airplay years after they were first released are present. This reissue adds a bonus track from 1996 "When You Love A Woman" that became an instant classic and arguably the only good track from their "Trial By Fire" album.
Yes there are some fan favorites and minor hits missing like "Mother, Father" and "Stone In Love" but what is here is some quality hits and they play so well together it is easy to forgot what is missing and enjoy what is here. Perfect for any road trip and for most this IS the only Journey the casual fan needs to own.
Free Music Review: a journey through your mind Hit: 5 Stars
Journey is one of those bands where their hit songs ARE, in fact, the best selections from the band (excluding the debut which is totally awesome). Maybe I'm bias because I have a childhood connection to the popular music from the early 80's, or maybe these are just really nice, well-performed songs.
"Wheel in the Sky" is probably my favorite song. It gives me hope, and God knows I need it after last weeks major fight I got into. "Faithfully" is really a touching song, isn't it? I love that one too. "Open Arms" is the reason I wanted this disc in the first place. It's one of the nicest-written songs of all-time. Well, maybe not. There's a lot of music out there. Let's not jump to conclusions here.
"Don't Stop Believin'" is now remembered for being the final song that played during the final segment of the popular TV show the Sopranos. Yeah, I didn't like the ending either, but the song was nice and fitting. It's amazing how heavy "Separate Ways" sounds to this very day. Back in the day it sounded like a regular pop song with a loud chorus. But now, father time has shown us just how unbelievably loud it really is.
Overall, good music, good memories, and good times.
