Free Music Notes for Heart & SoulFree Music Review: Some packaging flaws - my version at least. Hit: 4 Stars
Everything you've ever heard about Joy Division is true. They were a truly incredible band, even as Ian Curtis' vocals quickly dropped from ferocity to unsteady. Make no mistake, by the time Joy Division recorded 'Closer', Curtis had lost his vocal skill, whether to epilepsy or loss of soul. Doesn't matter - 'Closer' is a brilliant unforgettable record. This massive box set is equally wonderful, the only tracks left out are live tracks better unheard. (Their version of 'Sister Ray' is NOT superior to the original. Not at all.)The quality and content are great - you MUST hear this stuff. The problem I have is with the packaging. I bought the UK version - no different from the version now available in America. The glue was so weak that the CD cases shifted, dropping the actual CDs on the floor. Since every CD holds about 80 minutes, a scuff & nick matters a lot. Great CD-closers like "In a Lonely Place", "These Days" & "From Safety to Where?" were scratched, or at least threatened to. I had to buy this amazing box set twice, so be warned. Buy American! (Will they do it better?, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.....) (PS: shame on whoever designed the cover art. Ian Curtis looks like a stoned retard. This music isn't half-lid dull, it's nasty sad eye-wide reality...)
Free Music Review: Great music, poor packaging Hit: 4 Stars
If you want to get some Joy Division on CD, you need to get this box set. It's just about their complete discography of official releases and contains everything you need - both studio albums, all the singles, and a nice bunch of live recordings. The music is outstanding - kind of a blend of the Doors, The Cure, mixed with a Sex Pistols edge... you can tell JD were a huge influence on U2 and many other bands that followed. Really they have a unique sound all their own that stands out from everything else before or since. The packaging on this box set though flat out stinks. The 2nd time I opened mine it fell apart, seriously. And while the book is thick, the information isn't that good - the writer tried to be artsy and it doesn't come off well; I would prefer a detailed band bio and stuff about the songs. But if you want Joy Division, Heart and Soul is THE item to get. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: for the newbie and the groupie Hit: 4 Stars
Well for me as a teenager, JD was about the most important thing going, and certainly a major influence. Now I'm 39 and was pleased when my brother lent me his copy. I'd suggest everyone also rent/buy 24 hour party people (Ian the jerk) and then Control (Ian the unfortunate), but mostly I'd say this is good for the JD lover in your life. However, for the Newbie perhaps you'd want to get him/her the albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer instead of start with this collection. Collections lack something that the originals do have. The order of the songs, the tightness, the completeness. I suppose you could organize those two albums out of the contents of this collection. Do that, listen to the albums for 2 or so years and then you're ready for this and for "Still".
Free Music Review: Journey That Leads To The Sun Hit: 4 Stars
Perfect for first JD time buyers, or those of you who've had trouble finding the rare tracks included on Disc 3. The real Gem of this collection is the Book and the Live Disc 4. So what's the downside? For starters the tracks are not in cronological order--big disappointment. And second, there are a lot of studio tracks still missing. So it's incomplete, but still worth every penny.
Free Music Review: Grail of Gloom Hit: 4 Stars
This is it, this is the most complete Joy Division collection you could ask for. The obsessive collector likely has already assembled all these tracks from various discs, and there really is nothing new for the angst-ridden afficianado, but two things make it worth the price of admission: the convenience of the oeuvre on 4 discs; and the booklet.
