Canadian Music Store Free Music Notes for WinelightFree Music Review: A Smooth Jazz ClassicThe music world lost a great musician when the late Grover Washington Jr. was taken away from us so suddenly. But fortunately, he left us so many classic albums to cherish for many generations to come, with "Winelight" being just one of them. What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said. This album is without a doubt a smooth jazz classic, & it still sounds fresh today just like the time it was recorded back in 1980. All six cuts are classics, but the one that stands out for me is my personal favorite, "In The Name Of Love". The melody of this song is so beautiful & melencholy, that I guarantee you will start thinking of your current love, or reflect on a love in your past, like I always seem to do when I hear this piece. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that a vocal version of this song was recorded as well. But anyway, the entire "Winelight" album is perfect for those romantic candlelight dinners, or if you just want to chill at home after a hard day. And for those who think that smooth jazz is borderlining on predictable boredom (a la Kenny G.), "Winelight" may change that thought for you. If you want a more grittier, more funkier Grover, pick up his album "Feels So Good" from 1975 (another personal favorite), or anything from his Kudu/CTI period, which has thankfully been re-released after years of being out of print. But definetely make "Winelight" your first choice, & lose yourself in a world when music was music, & without all those cheesy, drum machine beats that is so dreadfully common in music today. Thank you Grover. May you rest in peace. |
