Free Music Review: Rhythmic colombian rock that touches your soul. Juanes best ever, and that is saying a lot.
Hit: 5 Stars

Juanes is something of a phenomenon. Who would have thought that the little metalhead boy from colombia would have the vision to break up his competent if not spectaular Metallica like band and then put out four consecutive 5 star Colombian rock albums? Who knew that he could write from a deep well of sensitivity--not only anger, pain, joy, encouragement, and love, but optimism too? Who knew that his guitar skill were so insinuating that they would worm their way into your unconscious so that each delicious guitar line seems to be the soundtrack to your life? Anyone that heard "Fijate Bien" probably thought it was a great album by a little boy who may or may not have any longevity. Then he blew away Fijate with the gigantic Un Dia Normal. Mi Sangre proved that he had completely grown up, and now he takes us so far beyond with Un Ratico.

The first song, No Creo en Jamas, is simply one of the best songs I have heard, English or Spanish in years. I am humming or singing it all the time. The heart of the album is his incredible title track, which seems so amazing that he has perspective that he does. I don't know how best to describe how music that is so encouraging, so beautiful, so touching is also musically so darn good! No cheese here! Pure invention, fantastic rockers, all with Colombian traditional backbone making them stronger.

Juanes is incredible. He deserves all 17 Latin Grammy's that he has won, and I am certain that he has a ton more left to win. But even if he never put out a single song again, his musical legacy is secure with this spectatular album. If you are a Juanes fan, then you probably already own this album. High five. If you are a fan of Rock en Espanol but have somehow had your head buried below ground for the last several years, look for further than Juanes. Buy everything he has without fear. If you are an English only speaker who is even the tiniest bit open to music in Spanish and you are a fan of rhythmic, well sung, well played, well constructed Spanish Rock, then put down that Mana album and buy this!

Free Music Review: Se lo recomiendo a todos
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD, although I say it with a tiny bit of hesitation because of how good the previous ones were, has got to be the best of Juanes. All of the songs show off Juanes's incredible musical talent, his voice is as wonderful as ever, and the communicated themes, with their positive messages about love and life and hope, resonate within any heart. The highlights of the CD are:

"No creo en el jamas" with its unique rhythm and powerful, pumped-up message about picking yourself up off your feet;

"Me enamora" - the hit song, fun, playful, and unmistakable Juanes;

"La vida es un ratico" - a pretty, mellow song about clinging to love through the bad times because "vienen tiempos buenos y los malos ya se van";

"Gotas de Agua Dulce" - a fun, ethnic, almost Mexican-sounding song (in the chorus) in which Juanes declares that "la verdad me estoy volviendo a enamorar";

"La Mejor Parte de Mi" - one of my very favorites, powerful and catchy; and

"Minas piedras," an ode to those who have been wounded by the infamous antipersonnel mines in Colombia and a call for hope and change.

In this CD one can see how Juanes has grown musically, and the variation of songs he presents makes for a delightful mixture of the best modern latin music has to offer. I recommend this CD 100% to any Juanes fan.

Free Music Review: Juanes' melodious and evocative musical return......
Hit: 5 Stars

For those of you unfamiliar with Juanes [as well as longtime fans], LA VIDA ES UN RATICO (Life is a Brief Moment) is quite possibly his best and strongest album to date. This beautiful CD is filled with tunes that combine infectious rock hooks with traditional Colombian rhythms and melodies. Juanes has had a gift for blending those two musical worlds together for as long as he has been making music, and his 2007 release is no exception. It starts on a determined and uplifting note with "No Creo en el Jamas" ("I Don't Believe in Never"). Many of the songs were inspired by his brief break-up with wife (and model) Karen Martinez. We can hear Juanes' tenderness (as well his pain) in his music and it truly speaks to you, whether you are fluent in Spanish or only in the language of music (a universal form of communication that all of us share). We hear the uptempo cumbia, emotional ballads, African-inspired beats (particularly on the irrerepressible "Bailala") and even a duet with fellow rocker Campino that starts out in Spanish and then is intermixed with verses in German.

If you buy one CD this year, it should be LA VIDA ES UN RATICO. I guarantee if you hear this album it will change the way you hear music (not just Latin Rock--a category that claims Juanes as his own). The language of music has never been expressed in a more beautiful (or personal) way.

Free Music Review: Like fine wine..just keeps getting better and better!!
Hit: 5 Stars

With his latest offering " La vida es un ratico",Juanes proves once again that he is here to stay for good.Just when you thought there was no way he could top his previous efforts( Fijate bien,Un dia normal & Mi sangre),he comes out with all latin rock guns blazing and delivers an album that simply put: it's the best latin album to come out in 2007 and one that will undoubtedly earn him several Grammy and MTV awards next year.And rightfully so...

Juanes is singing better,playing the guitar amazingly and writing his most meaningful lyrics to date.His songs always manage to be both melodical and touching,just the perfect combination if you ask me;which is why he is so far ahead from the rest of all other artists in Latin America.

I won't dissect every song here,but I will say this: "la Vida es un ratico" is an amazing album full of wonderful songs that deeply touch your heart and soul and make you wanna dance like only Juanes can through a brilliant mix of old school rock and an effective fusion of Latin & Colombian rhytms.Just like fine wine,Juanes just keeps getting beter and better.

Just do yourself a favor and get the best Latin album to come out this year!! you will not be disppointed my friends..

Free Music Review: Completely biased...
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to say, I've been a fan of Juanes' since I first heard "Nada" on MTV en español years ago. It's been absolutely amazing watching him grow as an artist, and as a fan, I feel privileged to have been a part of that. When I first heard this album, I wasn't sure about it. I felt it lacked the charm of Mi Sangre, the passion of Un Día Normal, and the fire of Fijate Bien. But the more I listened to it, and after seeing him perform his songs live, I fell deeply in love and the veil was lifted from my eyes. Me Enamora, which I had instantly liked, fell to the wayside. It's easily the weakest song on the album. If you want fun, there's Gotas de Agua Dulce. If you've had your heart broken and need to scream, there's Dificil. If you want to dance while washing the dishes, there's Tres. La Vida es Un ratico is reminiscent of Un Dia Normal in message and tone, but it's far more heart rending. Maybe it's the knowledge of the pain in Juanes' personal life that gives this CD more heart and soul, but while I respect and love his earlier CD's, I feel like this album was born of his sweat, blood, and tears. It's going to be hard to top.
