Free Music Review: A long lost Judas Priest masterpiece!
Hit: 4 Stars

There are two types of Judas Priest fans:

1-The ones who were introduced to the band from the time when they became popular in the US with Screaming for Vengeance in the early 80s Heavy Metal explosion.

2-Fans who are familiar with their 70's hard rock / metal catalog.

So for those who are familiar with Priest's catalog you would know that Nostradamus is basically a stylistic retake of their second album, the masterpiece called "Sad Wings of Destiny," the same album who produced the necessary live Priest staples such as "The Ripper" "Victim of Changes" "Tyrant" and "Genocide"

This album is not Painkiller, so if you are familiar with Priest's catalog, be forewarned that this album resembles their 70s catalog of songs, with updated sound and production, but this doesn't mean the songs don't rock.. to the contrary

All i can tell you is that you are a true Priest fan and you enjoy most of their albums from their old to the new, you are going to love Nostradamus very much..

Maybe some of the keyboard orchestral accompaniments sound over the top, but the songs are still heavy and never sound cheesy.
I can only imagine listening to some of these songs being played live!!

I am glad Judas Priest made this album as a nod to their own history, because they are one of the first pioneer metal bands, instead of trying to emulate and sound like every new metalcore / numetal band out there, they have done something very original that doesn't sound like anything in their catalog.

Kudos for Judas Priest for trying something new based on their own sound and song catalog.

2008.08.14 UPDATE
I was lucky enough to see (and photograph from the pit) Judas Priest playing with Voivod two days ago on Bell Center in Montreal, and let me tell all the Nostradamus haters.. the whole place was singing the opener song of Priests' set Prophecy, so this album is NOT a flop..far from it
The band sounded as heavy and loud as ever.. so there!

Free Music Review: Solid and Unconventional Effort
Hit: 4 Stars

Priest is a band that has reinvented itself a number of times over the years to keep up with the times. More remarkably, they have done so successfully. After the synth guitar driven sound of Turbo and the rather flat Ram It Down, most everybody was taken aback by the brilliant intensity of Painkiller, an album many fans thought to be the regrettable, albeit fitting, swansong for the band as Halford left following that tour. When they reconvened a few years ago to release Angel of Retribution, that album was also a hit with fans and critics.

Whether or not Nostradamus will receive the same accolades is an open question. After the fast and heavy Angel of Retribution, the more down tempo of the majority of Nostradamus will doubtless not sit well with some fans, and at over two sprawling hours of music, there are some less than brilliant spots on the album. Nonetheless, Priest has on this record tapped into the wave of progressive metal explored by younger bands like Kamelot, in a convincing and enjoyable way, and there are great tracks (both up and down tempo) peppered throughout both disks.

The packaging for the special edition is really a treat. The look and feel is reminiscent of a children's book, except for, you know, the demons and skulls and whatnot. As promised, a code was included in the special edition that I was able to redeem for a free ticket to the Dallas show. I was particularly suspicious about this. I figured there had to be a catch, but no, you just have to register on livenation as you would if you were going to purchase a ticket normally, select the "metalmaster" ticket option, put in your code, and whammo, they mail you the ticket. Not even so much as a handling fee.

Free Music Review: A great headphones CD!
Hit: 4 Stars

I will start off by saying this is a
very good release just short of
being a great CD, but kudos to the
Priest for an ambitious effort. I
think the best way to appreciate
this is in the headphone mix,
(preferrably at night) not really a
car CD. Listen to all the subtle
nuances that you miss in regular
stereo play. Very dense with great instrumentation. This CD unfolds
like a great drama. I think the
performances are stellar even
though it doesn't have a ton of
uptempo tracks it still rocks with
the slow-mid tempos. The concept,
melodies,and lyrics are very well
written. The light passages give
this CD balance. I think some of
the Priest fans that didn't like
it may have different expectations
and probaby would like it if another
band name were on it. It really
stands apart from everyone
else in its vision and is great
in that respect. Unfolds like a
great rock opera and will be
amazing live. Give the Judas
Priest the respect of several
listens, it becomes infections.
The best conceptual CD since
Operation Mindcrime.
