Free Music Review: I've changed my mind!

I'm listening to Rocka Rolla for the first time in about 10 years tonight, and my feelings on it have *definitely* improved. Now I can appreciate the album for what it is, instead of trying to convince myself most of the material is nothing but Black Sabbath or Alice Cooper secondrate rock. I was flat out WRONG to believe such a thing, and I have no problem admitting it here on amazon, to the thousands of viewers who read these reviews. I was wrong.
You see what happened is that I completely underrated the rawness and the bluesy roots Judas Priest started out with. Rocka Rolla is a significant improvement over a good portion of Judas Priest's career in fact, including many of their bland 80's albums which mostly sound like lame commercial generic 80's cheese metal in comparison to Rocka Rolla.
"One for the Road" has a spectacular chorus and an enticingly steady verse melody. This is one of the songs I severely underrated 10 years ago when I first heard it. Back then I felt the songwriting was really weak on this particular track. I now have to ask myself "What WAS I thinking?" This is actually really good hard rock with *just* the right amount of blues elements to give it a powerful edge and a distinct advantage over the bands future albums (particularly their 80's albums).
The title song has a fantastic beat, but perhaps the ultimate example of excellence on the entire album is the 9-minute suite that begins with "Winter" and ends with "Cheater". Yes my friends, these songs *should* flow together and never ever be separated. "Cheater" in particular is a perfect example of the bands early roots in exploring the heavy blues, and the verse melody and chorus is irresistible. The lyrics are amazing too "SHE WAS A CHEATER!" I LOVE when the lead singer screams that part because you can really feel the emotion in his voice. The signs of a great band are definitely noticeable throughout Rocka Rolla.
There's one vocal melody in the middle of this suite that reminds me of Alice Cooper for a few seconds before immediately shifting into something else. Oh, and the 2 minutes of guitar feedback actually *works* in this case, unlike the many times Jimi Hendrix and Chicago attempted the same thing and beat it into the ground to the point of being excessive and overbearing.
"Run of the Mill" may have a bland song title, but the song itself is definitely NOT "run of the mill". The verse melody creates a depressing mood before shifting into a gentle guitar solo. This guitar solo ever so gradually shifts into a much heavier and melodic one. It's really good too. Another track I seriously underrated back in the day.
Perhaps "Dying to Meet You/Hero, Hero" is the first sign that the band was going to change styles drastically by the time Sad Wings of Destiny was created. What a great vocal melody. The guitar solo at the end is quite intense too. I underrated this song back in the day and, looking back, I really don't understand what I was thinking. "Never Satisfied" is based around a heavy blues riff with catchy vocals. It's awesome.
No doubt about it- I enjoy Rocka Rolla significantly more these days. Don't make the same mistake I did and write it off immediately- it's a HECK of a lot better than that.
