Free Music Review: Strong voices,steamy material

Excellent compilation divided between two less-known but sensational voices: you listen Judy Clay hitting those deep notes and it makes you think she's the best singer in the world,that's how good she is.
Her classic duet with William Bell ("Private Number") is here,along with several other rare singles that sound like "Stax" at its best.
Veda Brown is worthy partner on this compilation - not as thundering as Clay (who is really in top class when it comes to soul singers) but very good nevertheless. Her early 1970s funk material is strong,well produced and always well-sung. In fact,she has her own version of "If Loving You Is Wrong,I Don't Want To Be Right" (titled differently here) some good two years before Millie Jackson who basically copied her version almost note by note and made it a centerpiece of her "Caught Up" album in 1974.
"I Can See Every Woman's Man But Mine" is old gospel number dressed up like a soul ballad (Ruth Brown did same with this song back in 1955.) and old Little Willie John/Peggy Lee number "Fever" is presented like a full-blown "Shaft" wah wah number out of some early 1970s blaxploitation movie.
Shame it is such a short CD because these ladies deserve full retrospective or at least double CD divided between them,very very good music.
