Free Music Notes for Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary EditionFree Music Review: La Judy Hit: 5 Stars
Many things have been written about Judy. She was a volcano of a human being. She has been called divine, tragic, superb, schizophrenic, diva, addict, star, and the full gamut of adjectives/nouns in between.
All are true. What is missing is the article adjective "THE", because that is what she was:
THE DIVA,
THE STAR,
THE DIVINE MISS GARLAND.
When she was 12 years old, Al Jolson heard her record a song at MGM. He said that she was the greatest singer in the world and that she would only get better with age. I wish Al could have lived long enough to attend this performance at Carnegie Hall. He would have smiled and said, "I told you so."
Buy this masterpiece. Enjoy it with abandon. You will laugh, cry, sigh, and respond in ways you won't expect.
And then, when all your friends and family have birthdays, buy each one of them a copy as a birthday present. Do not fret if they give you an arch and quizzical eyebrow, especially the younger ones. They will listen to it, and come back to you with the most grateful, gushing thanks that you blessed them with this keepsake and treasure.
God love you, Judy. We had you for a while, and we are fortunate enough to have your legacy to melt and our hearts, open our tear ducts, and put smiles on our lips even when we do not feel like smiling.
This album captures Judy at her very best. Her best is sublime.
Free Music Review: ......two hours of pow!! Hit: 5 Stars
There are not many live recordings of this age that can boast such a long re-issue history, but this one defies all belief. First brought out as a double album in 1961 and remaining weeks in the No.1 spot, re-issued countless times on vinyl and finally making a single CD release in an abridged form at the end of the 1980's. This "abridged form" resulted in a deluge of complaint letters to Capitol from angry fans who (quite rightly) were outraged that the definitive Garland recording (for that's what it is) should be butchered in such a way. Subsequently, Capitol re-issued the CD as a Double CD set, restoring much of the evenings banter and storytelling by the talented Miss Garland. DCC Classics finally got their hands on the master tapes and beautifully restored more of the concert. (The running order corrected and previously inserted "studio" recordings removed and the original tracks replaced). This sold as a 24k Gold Edition for "Audiophiles" but at a price. And here we are again, 40 years on, fully restored by Capitol self and sounding as fresh and alive as she did on that magical evening of April 23 1961. Miss Garland shimmers and soars. The voice a little dry and tight at first, but boy!, does she shake that off and take you on a musical journey that you will find hard to file away or forget. A million in one........buy it!
Free Music Review: Still Amazed....Still Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
I first received the LP of this album for my 13th birthday and it altered my life path to that of a singer and actress. Never had I been exposed to something as completely and overwhelmingly mesmerizing as this performer--this VOICE, this otherworldly talent....from SOMEWHERE (over the rainbow?). I listened to it over and over for more than 45 years. I even sought out new turntables, in the ages of 8-tracks--and later CD players--just to be able to hear this album.
Finally, worn out--but NEVER to be thrown away--the LP needed to be replaced with a CD...and WHAT A CD!! The LP did not have the "patter" between numbers with the magnificent Mort Lindsey (and his Orchestra), nor the conversations, asides and stories Judy relates to the audience that this CD includes.
I am estatic, after all these decades, to actually hear virtually the WHOLE CONCERT that has been a major part of almost my entire cultural life. I am nearly reduced to tears listening to this recording--at full blast, on my car stereo with the windows rolled up and singing along--to every little piece of phrasing and emotional quaver... clear as a bell and more delicious than it's ever been. Many, many thanks for this remastered recording by this National Treasure, the incomparable Judy Garland. I will cherish it for another 45 years!
Free Music Review: Garland simply at her best--deserves 20 stars!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Simply put, this recording documents one of the greatest triumphs of Garland's career. The quality of the recording is excellent. That night Judy came out to a standing ovation and if you turn the volume up just a little and listen carefully you can even hear fans chanting a chorus of "Judy! Judy! Judy!" over and over again. Garland then goes on to sing 26 songs, including some jazz, and wows the audience with her performance. Her rapport with the audience is excellent and the fact that Garland concerts were scripted is impossible to notice here. At the end of the second CD of this two CD set there is a long instrumental of "Over the Rainbow." It was at this time that fans rushed to the apron to shake hands with Judy or at least touch her hand or wrist for even just an instant of a second. How I wish I could have been there that night! Many stars flew in expressly for the occasion. Judy does two encores of After You've Gone and Chicago; they are exquisitely well done. At one point Judy "wonders" if the audience is getting tired--how they scream NO! Then she comments that perhaps she should keep singing and that they should all stay all night--and they SCREAM FOR MORE WITH DELIGHT! PLEASE, get this two CD set--I can't see how you or anyone could possibly regret this purchase. A strong BUY!
Free Music Review: Stop what you're doing and buy this CD now! Hit: 5 Stars
I admit, I was never a great fan of Judy Garland prior to listening to this CD. Well, I'm a huge fan now, and with very good reason. Judy at Carnegie Hall is without question the most exciting live performance I have ever heard. Judy is flawless, the orchestra is amazing, the music selection is perfect, etc. etc. What I like most about this CD, though, is that its sound quality is so clear and balanced that you can't help but feel you are right there in the crowd with her. Favorite tunes? A second-place tie between the energy of "Who Cares," the swing of "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," the excitement of "Rock-a-bye My Baby," and the transcendence of "Swanee." They're all fantastic, amazing. I challenge you to listen to the Carnegie Hall crowd go nuts after Swanee and then say this isn't the best live performance ever recorded. But the heart of this performance is "Over the Rainbow." The last "somewhere" Judy sings is incredible; in one word, one note, she captures the innocence of the life she once had as a young woman and the weariness she now feels in middle age. If you're even reading this review, it probably means you care about great music. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. You will not stop listening.
