Free Music Notes for Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary EditionFree Music Review: More than a concert Hit: 5 Stars
1961 was interesting time in popular music. The rawness of Elvis had faded into memory, Motown and the Beatles were ahead of us. The songs of Tin Pan Alley had been written and performed innumerable times. Why then did a Hollywood movie star who hadn't made a film in seven years top the BillBoard charts with a live double album? Because she wasn't simply singing popular American songs, she was revealing the depth of the lyrics, the excitement of the melodies and their enduring freshness. Judy Garland was summing up an era of music that soon would be drowned out by the British Invasion and the assault of rock & roll on all other forms of popular music. And no one else could deliver on the promise of the great American songbook because Judy wasn't only a terrific singer but was a great actress whose roots in vaudeville meant that she could sell the singing and the acting in a way that has never been equalled. On April 23, 1961, her phrasing and rhythm were never better which made for a magical performance even by the high standards of this most magical artist.
Free Music Review: Garland Shines In One Of The Best Concert Albums Ever Hit: 5 Stars
Picture it: the year is 1961, in New York's fabeled Carnegie Hall. And Judy Garland steps up to the microphone in a do or die situation. It's been 23 years since she captured America's heart as the ruby-slipper-clad Dorothy Gail in "The Wizard Of Oz". And now she's out to prove to the press, her fans, her critics, and herself that she's still got it. She not only proved everyone wrong, but in the process, Judy Garland gave one of the greatest recorded performances of the the history of American music. For 2 and a half hours she brought the audience to it's feet with the standard showtunes like "Swanee", and "Stormy Weather". And she brought the house down with her signature, show-stopper song, "Over The Rainbow". When the actual record was released, it went gold and spent 13 weeks at the top of the charts. And it won an unpresedented 5 Grammy awards. If there ever was a list of greatest concert albums, Judy At Carnegie Hall belongs at the top of that list.
Free Music Review: Carnegie Hall At Last! Hit: 5 Stars
Years ago I bought the CD, "Judy At Carnegie Hall" and was fully amazed by Judy Garland's performance in this now legendary concert. The one problem was, though the performance was utterly fantastic, the original CD set had sound quality that was quite poor. From the first time I heard it, all I could think was, "I hope someday they remaster this." Well strike up the band because that DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!!! In commemoration of the concert's 40th anniversary, Capitol Records has now released the CD in wonderful 24-bit digitally remastered sound. The old mud is gone and now we can hear Judy belt out clearly, versions of her classic songs such as 'That's Entertainment", "The Trolley Song" and "The Man That Got Away". The CD includes Judy's rendition of her signature theme song, "Over the Rainbow" which is truely a show stopper and the disc's highlight! If you are a Garland fan or just a plain fan of great singing, BUY THIS CD!!!
Free Music Review: No Artist will ever come close to this live album Hit: 5 Stars
I still get chills just hearing the overture from this masterpiece.I close my eyes and imagine I'm in the audience almost 40 years ago, waiting to see Judy Garland perform.Only one year before this night,Judy almost died. Doctors told her she would never sing again. When Judy sings the first song,"When you smilling," you can't believe the voice your hearing. What volume, style, emotion, and this goes on solid untill the last song,"Chicago." Even the mistakes,"You go to my head, with an I forgot the Doggone words," is one of the high lights from the "Carnegie Hall" CD.I've been listening to this record since 1975.I've worn out ten albums, and finally have his fantastic CD to cherish for the rest of my life. After seeing "Me and My Shadows," and Judy Davis as the legend ,I can't stop playing this record all over again. If there is any wannabe singers out there. This album is your teacher.Listen and learn. Its going to blow your mind.
Free Music Review: NOT ENOUGH STARS IN THE GALAXY TO GIVE THIS CD Hit: 5 Stars
Well, even after all these years, this is simply the very best live performance ever recorded. Judy Garland was at the top of her form and there never was and never will be anyone who can touch this remarkable talent, especially at her peak. If she'd never done another thing in her career her position as an icon would be assured. But what a career she had! The voice is just unbelievale, but even more amazing is her heart, her soul, her incredible delivery. She sells these songs as no one ever has. You can hear the tears in "Over the Rainbow"; you'll be amazed with "Stormy Weather" as well as by "The Man that Got Away" and "San Francisco." This is a spectacular recording too, remastered with care. It's almost like being there. If you've never heard this recording you just don't know what you've missed. If you've loved for years, as I have, get ready for an entirely new experience thanks to modern technology. Buy it today!
