Free Music Review: Shining on....

For openers I am a newcomer to the world of Juliana Hatfield. Yes, I did hear her on the radio and now and again through soundtracks, but this is really the first full album I've paid close attention to. Now, I see all these reviews about how this is a breakup album. Well, I can certainly hear a little bit of that, but for me it sounds like an artist waking up, sobering up, setting off in motion, getting ready to start a new beginning. The haunting, melancholy opening of "The Fact Remains" lyrically certainly doesn't share the sentiment I'm proposing here, but go beyond the subject matter and listen to how the music and the voice connect with one another. This is a sobering beginning. This is the getting up from a fall, or it's the looking around and realising you aren't where you're supposed to be. "Shining On" continues the sobering up feeling and is quite possibly the most beautiful song on the record. This album really gets set in motion with "This Lonely Love" featuring some excellent, deep, rich backing vocals by Rick Butler of Psychedelic Furs. This and the next two to follow, "My Baby..." and "Just Lust", if looking at this album as a process these are the catalysts that set our songstress in motion on the road to moving on. This is indeed an album in motion. Each song is a highlight and each adds to the journey. Another highlight is the poignant, soundtrack destined "Remember November." All in all, this album will make you take a look at your own life and find similarities of when you woke up, looked around, made a decision to get up, smile and move on. This will be your soundtrack to walking away. I highly recommend this record to Juliana fans and newcomers alike. It's a great starting point and it's a great addition to the collection.
