Free Music Review: The 1968 Andrews-Previn Christmas album (with odd bonuses)

Julie Andrews' "Greatest Christmas Songs" is actually a strange title for this 2000 release, which takes all of the tracks from her 1968 album "A Christmas Treasure," and then adds some pop standards from her 1958 album "Julie Andrews Sings." The Christmas songs, all of which were orchestrated by André Previn, were the first things Andrews recorded after doing "The Sound of Music." One of the things that made the collection rather different was that the songs are those that would be more familiar to an English audience that an American, or familiar tunes with different words, as with "Angels From the Realm of Glory." Previn received equally billing on the original and should have gotten such credit again, since he plays harpsichord on instrumental versions of "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" and "Greensleeves (What Child Is This?)." His arrangements are also a bit different, and if you want to think that Previn was orchestrating these songs as if they were going to be part of a movie soundtrack, I do not think that you would be far off the mark. Check out the unusual version of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." Then at the end of the album you have what amounts to Andrews doing an encore singing the show tunes "It Might as Well be Spring" by Rodgers & Hammerstein, "Falling in Love with Love" by Rodgers & Hart, and Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek." I suppose there were contractual roadblocks to pulling a couple of tracks from her 1982 "Christmas with Julie Andrews" album, but this odd little trio of songs at the end gives me mixed feelings. I like bonus tracks on CDs, but on a Christmas album you really do need to color in between the lines. I am almost tempted to rate this as a better album without those three songs, just on the basis of this just being a re-release of the 1968 Andrews-Previn album. Andrews' fans should appreciate the opportunity to hear some of her vocal work from when she was the toast of Broadway, but, yes, programming the CD player to skip those three tracks during the holiday season seems an appropriate and rather necessary response.
