Free Music Review: So good, you won't think it's live!
Hit: 4 Stars

julieta, god bless you!!! i've been listening to this album for the past year and it hasn't gotten old yet (or ever). For all the haters out there, while i am a big fan of aqui and bueninvento, i'm so happy she went pop, because i don't know what i'd do without her. I sing along to her songs everyday and her songs have the ability to pacify babies! I loved the post-modern pop sounds of Si and simple (neo)folkish ways of limon y Sal. BUT the hallmark of her talent is the ability to create unique yet catchy melodies coupled by meaningful yet simple lyrics.

Whereas the last two albums possessed true understatement and restrain, this unplugged really brought IT in the instrumentation. In the world of pop, It's definitely inventive(the use of tuba, musical saw, vibraphone, string, banjo), but always precise and never indulgent, so the results always come off comforting and never forced. Julieta's voice is always in command, and it showcases versatility. The musical guests are super well selected.

Her new songs show a more introspective Julieta, but also perhaps a more political one. El presente is about loving and being in the present moment, even though the world is on the brink of destruction. Algun Dia is about the promise of self-improvement and realization. Ilusion, julieta's best ballad perhaps, is the mourning of the loss of ilusions through life. And mira la vida is an ode to feminine power and a tribute to pregnant women. These songs has taken a more worldly outlook than her usual intimate, relationship-based songs.

Julieta's sound continues treading forward into new ground: norteno-ska, polka-banda, tribal drums. While never abandoning her songwriting and melodies. I've never enjoyed a julieta album as much as this one, but perhaps it's because i'm getting a little bit of everything here. Still, I can't wait for what she's doing next.

Free Music Review: Very Very Good But....
Hit: 4 Stars

First, I love Julieta, and everything she's done up to now. She is a beautiful woman with great musical talent who has given us many unforgetable songs. I saw her twice here in NY in 2008 during her "El Presente" tour: in Central Park & at the Nokia Theater. And anyone who loves Julieta will want to have this disc - and the DVD also. From this MTV disc must be added to her list of hits several new ones: "El Presente", "Mira la vida", "Ilusion" (with Marisa Monte) and "Algun dia" (with Gustavo Santaolalla). But her retreads of her previous hits, (with the single exception of her new version of "limon y sal") were disappointing. In particular, the duet with Juan Son of "de mis pasos" was, for me, a total let-down. Her original accordion driven version of "de mis pasos" on her first disc, AQUI is already scalding hot and a totally awsome show stopper. Why try to make the best better?

The sound and video is spectacular. Julietta displays her multi instrumental talents and is accompanied by great special guests. A real treat

Free Music Review: Good, but a little dissapointing
Hit: 3 Stars

I absolutely loved Limon y Sal, and so I was surprisingly dissapointed with this album. I think the main reason is that it sounds like the music engineer messed up the vocal recording. The vocals aren't nearly as clear and expressive as in Limon y Sal. Also, the acoustic arrangements didn't do much for me, which is surprising because I've loved just about every other MTV Unplugged album that I've ever had. On the other hand, I did enjoy getting to hear a selection of Julieta's older songs, and I like "El Presente", so overall it is a nice album to have.
