Free Music Review: A REAL mixed bag.

I never heard OF Junior Brown til a good friend of mine gave me a tape of one of his Austin City Limits shows, and I was completely blown away. Junior Brown is surely one of the greatest guitarists of all time, the greatest living guitar god.(My favorite guitarist is Link Wray, and that's no put-down to Junior Brown; I prefer Link over Hendrix also--but then, I prefer Junior over Jimi!). This CD has its mind-blowing moments, such as I Hung It Up,which is a million times better than the studio take, with leads--you know how this guy can play. If you don't,while you need to hear Junior, I'd recommend Long Walk Back or his Greatest Hits CDs over this. That said, The medley here is incredible also, as is Broke Down South of Dallas. Some other tracks just aren't that exciting; this is hard to get a full grasp on. I wish there was a DVD of his Austin City Limits performances; he's really incredible to watch. So basically, if you are a Junior Brown fan, you'll want this in your collection; if you've nothing by him, start elsewhere. Although this is incredible at times, it's nevertheless a bit disappointing, and yes, it is without tracks of his that would surely make this more exciting (no "Freedom Machine"?,e.g.). I should definitely be thinking more than "not bad" throughout a lot of the only live disc by this genius (who, for JB neophytes, is more rock 'n' roll than country-- a class of his own).
