I just picked this up (again) after I went through my collection and couldn't find my copy. I hadn't listened to it for a while and I almost forgot how really good this album is. As others have noted this is a classic and it belongs in everyone's collection. This time I bought the SACD/CD hybrid, and the sound quality is absolutely stunning. Those microphones in the 60's were better than the 60's speakers. Buy this album, you won't be disappointed. Junior Wells is amazing and Buddy Guy is no slouch, even after 40 years.
Hoodoo Man Blues Poster
One of the all-time great urban blues records and the best-seller in the famed Delmark catalog, Hoodoo Man Blues is so full of bravado and snap it'll make you feel tough just listening to it. Not all of the Delmark titles were recorded very well, but this one certainly was. The album, which features Buddy Guy on guitar, is not only Junior Wells' first LP appearance, it 's damn near the first LP by a Chicago blues band. Chess and a few other labels had reissued 45s by Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, etc., but virtually no one had tried to capture the Chicago blues sound free of the limitations of juke box/airplay promotion. Hoodoo Man Blues went a long way in the popularization of real Chicago blues and of Junior Wells.This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of "Good Morning Little School Girl" is a proper update--still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout "Chitlin Con Carne." --Robert Gordon
