Free Music Notes for Just Because I'm a Woman: The Songs of Dolly Parton AlbumFree Music Review: To set the record straight Hit: 3 StarsA correction needs to be made to the Editorial Review on this album. Although it was Dolly's first solo album on RCA Victor, it was not her first solo effort. Has everyone forgotten the material she recorded for the Monument Label? Dolly came to Nashville in 1964, and after numerous labels turned her down (even RCA Victor was one) Frred Foster of Monument Records gave her a contract in 1965. She recorded 2 albums {HELLO, I'M DOLLY and AS LONG AS I LOVE) for him between 1965-1067, and it was because of the success she had with such songs as "Dumb Blonde" that RCA decided to take a chance on her in 1968. "Just Because I'm A Woman" was her first album for RCA in 1968. The songs were not much different from her Monument material. Dolly did not have a #1 hit until "Joshua" in 1971. The complaint I have with this tribute album, is that if they are going to title it as "Just Because I'm A Woman" they should use the tracks that appeared on that album, and not a whole lot of material Dolly recorded later in her career. Since I much prefer Dolly during the earlier period of her recording career (when she was traditional country), I would have enjoyed hearing other artists interpretations of the songs from the 1968 album.
