I'd be willing to bet that almost anyone that's here reading reviews is looking for a review of the sound quality of this remastered CD, since you could just as easily opt for the other version put out by Polygram.
You want this one!
I have the first CD version and when I ordered this remaster and listened to it, the difference and improvement was obvious from the first acoustic notes of "This Morning".
Every dimension of this version shines from the vocals to the bass and strings. The pianos, acoustic guitars, harps, flutes. Everything. It's hard to say what jumps out more compared to the other version. And this isn't a case of the remaster just being LOUDER than the previous version. It's the clarity. It does seem that there are quite a few remastered CDs by major artists where the newer version is just louder with some marginal improvements. This isn't one of those cases. How good does this CD sound? You could compare it to the seven tracks from this album that were remastered in 1994 for the Time Traveller box set, and the ones on this disc would still win hands down.
The music itself is five-star quality, too. I agree with many people here that, sure, this could have been the 8th classic Moodies album. Funny thing is, if you listen to the harmonies for "When You Wake Up", you'll swear that Ray Thomas is there! Also, listen to the ascending part of "My Brother", where they sing "...our voices are divided by an ocean, an ocean..." and it might remind you of the lead-in to the chorus of "Driftwood" from the Moodies' "Octave" album. Twist my arm for a favorite here and it would have to be "I Dreamed Last Night". This is a great CD from beginning to end, but I can't stress enough that this is the version you want and if you have the original Polygram CD, or even the Time Traveller box, you will not be sorry for purchasing this one. Paschal Byrne worked on the remastering of this 2004 remaster, and I'm pretty sure he also worked on the 2006/2007 remasters of the Moody Blues Classic Seven. He's done another amazing job here.
The other thing to consider is that it looks like you could get this pretty easily for less that $15, postage included. I can remember before the days of Amazon when a special order on an import like this would be well over $20.
