Free Music Notes for FutureSex / LoveSoundsFree Music Review: The future of music, and I'm lovin' the sound! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of Justin every since he broke away from the ties that were holding him down and shone on his own with his debut `Justified', but with his sophomore effort Justin ventures even further away from his boy band roots and gives us a diverse and enjoyable album and by the end of this album we see Justin truly come into his own. From the competent beats that Timbaland laces every track with to Justin's signature falsetto coupled with undeniably catchy hooks `FutureSex/LoveSounds' delivers on every front and will leave the listener completely satisfied.
Starting off with `Futuresex/Lovesound' Justin immediately wets our appetite with an ample offering oozing forth with atmosphere and sexy energy we hadn't seen on his previous album. His voice is also much sultrier on this song, keeping far away from his falsetto and singing every line with this breathy grown voice. This song is so sexually charged it's addictive and the lyrics are so far from his boy band days your forced to take a double take.
And then of course we have `Sexyback' which has become one of the most addicting songs I've ever heard. When my wife and I first heard this song we weren't completely sold, but after hearing it a few times I am a complete fan. The electronic take on his voice is interesting and entrancing almost, but it's Timbaland's infectious beat that keeps this track on constant replay in my CD player. The dirty lyrics and almost creepy sexuality in Justin's voice only add to the guilt factor to loving this song and that makes it all the more addicting.
Now I'm not a huge fan of `Sexy Ladies'. The beat to me is a bit dry, and Justin comes off so cocksure it's almost funny. It's not utterly terrible, but it's just a bit lame. Now what's not late is the prelude `Let me talk to you' which is tagged to the end of this track where Timbaland and Timberlake trade verses over a chopped up version of the `My Love' beat.
That's leads us into the second single off the album, `My Love' featuring T.I. which is burning up the clubs and radio stations right now. The track is the first on the album where Timberlake falls back into his style off `Justified', giving us the smooth falsetto and charisma that glistened on almost every track. The beat here is brilliant and perfectly compliments Justin's tone. The lyrics are a fall back a bit to the boy band days, but what sets this apart is the sick production and the confidence in Justin's voice that lifts him above most artists working today.
`Lovestoned' seems to be a fan favorite. The beat is fresh and funky, but Justin really elevates this track above the rest with his sheer confidence that laces his voice with every word uttered. He believes every word and you do too. I really love the interlude `I think she knows', which totally remixes the beat adding some Linkin Park elements to it, and Justin's voice really shines here, taking full control of the track and proving that Justin isn't just a sex symbol but he is a truly talented artist.
`What Goes Around Comes Back Around' is a great track, with an interesting Asian twist on the beat, soft lyrics that just give this laid back vibe that reminds me of the feeling I had when listening to `Cry Me A River' for the first time. The interlude which is more like a continuation of this track where the beat gets a bit jazzed up but the same laid back flow is held in tack and Justin really shows he's got enough silk in his flow to hang with the best of them.
Now I've read some reviews saying that `Chop Me Up' was really just a showcase for Timbaland and Three 6 Mafia where Timberlake just sings hook, but that's not the way I see it. The whole first half of the track is Timberlake slinging straight laced silky lyrics over Timbaland's tight beats, and then Timbaland takes over for the second verse before Three 6 comes in and closes the house down. Despite what you may think, this is Justin's track for he far outshines the guest vocalists. The one thing that makes Three 6's part stand apart though is the switch in the beat which takes a turn for the better so I can see how it would stand apart, but it doesn't take over.
I think that Timberlake's first collaboration with Black Eyed Peas was a great call, giving Justin some cred in the urban community and giving the Black Eyed Peas their first real hit. That said I'm not to keen on `Damn Girl' featuring BEP frontman Will.i.am. The whole feel of the track is a bit forced to me, and Will.i.am's rap at the end takes away from track to me (that is to say that I really don't like it). That and the vocals on the track seem to be staticy and it just feels like the production isn't clean.
Love `Summer Love'...it's just an all around great track and great redemption after the last track. Justin spits flow a lot faster than average on this track borderline hip hop flow and really shows how he's improved in his delivery since his N*Sync days. The beat and production is all top notch. The prelude `Set the Mood' really turns things down and gets us prepared for the slowest track on the album.
`Until the End of Time' is a bit corny but it does deliver in the vocal department. No matter what Justin is singing, no matter how cliché the words may be his delivery is as smooth and silky as can be that it almost doesn't matter. Especially when he varies his vocal range towards the end of the track during the "you got me sayin' oh".
Justin tackles deeper subjects on `Losing My Way' trying to show he's more than just a Casanova. It's not the worst way to handle the subject of drug abuse and throwing your life away, and while some have mentioned the simple almost corny lyrics you have to admit that it's no worse than everything else out there right now. The track doesn't seem so strong in the beginning but by the end it really breaks into its own and really shines as the chorus is taken over by a choir and Justin shouts backup.
`All Over Again' was actually one of the first songs I heard off the album. I downloaded this track about a month ago and fell in love with it. It actually has a very John Mayer vibe to it, laid back and elegant, and Justin's voice carries so well over the piano and sounds like he belongs in a jazz club crooning for all of us to enjoy. This is the rawest track here and it really shows the grace in his voice, letting it crack when it needs to, adding amounts of humanity and sincerity in his lyrics.
The bonus track is just that, a bonus track. `Pose' isn't the worst song (better than `Damn Girl') and it's elevated by the appearance of Snoop Dogg, but it's definitely a few notches below the best on this album.
The album as a whole is polished and consistently impressive. Justin has grown since his N*Sync days, and even then some from his debut. Anyone doubting Justin's staying power will be silenced after hearing this album, and rightfully so. Justin proves that he's much more than a pretty boy for he has the pipes and the ambition to be one of the greatest music acts working today. I really never thought I'd every say that about Mr. Timberlake, but even I need to give credit where credit is due. I expected to enjoy this album, but I never expected to love it. I have a feeling that Justin is the future of our music, and if that's the case then our future looks pretty good.

One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. On that track, Timberlake's appeal is his sweet but newly thuggish-sounding voice--here's a good kid gone bad, and he's determined to convince us of it not only by tossing a few well-timed mother****ers our way but also with such lyrics as "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave." The rest of FutureSex will feel familiar to anyone who picked up 2002's brilliantly funk-flecked Justified: "Love Stoned/I Think She Knows Me," shifts from Michael Jackson-esque paranoid trilling to pulsating guitar rock; "Chop Me Up," a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia and Timbaland, gives up the grit rap-style but still manages to recall both Prince and Stevie Wonder; "My Love," with T.I., mines classic Timberlake territory with meltaway lyrics like "I can see us holding hands walking on the beach/Our clothes in the sand"; and the straight-up but groovy lament "Losing My Way" asks, searchingly, what may be the silliest question a squeal-inducing pop star has ever posed: "Can anybody out there feel me?" Rest assured, JT: we feel every past-, present-, and future-sexy verse. --Tammy La Gorce
