Free Music Review: Kataklysm!

Ok some people may not like it, but I for one do. This is playing to perfection. It's so goooooooood!!!!! Fast, technical playing, and it's played to perfection. Nice Vocals as well. Some of the more refreshing bands. The phrase "technical" death metal is thrown about like a prostitute at a Kennedy's birthday party, but it could not be farther from the truth. While their style does not fit into generic death metal, it does however fit into many other pre-existing styles and variants of metal such as; black, death, melodic death, and hardcore. Lots of melody pieces have been spliced into the sounds of heavy distorted riffs, frantic drumming, and guttural vocals, as well as a general style of lead guitar, which is familiar to melodic death metal. The riffs, when used, are more of a heavy metal riff, i.e. lots of distortion and long drawn out chords, and actually coalesce very well with the melody and add a distinctive signature of North America to a European sound. The guitar work is for the most part fairly original, but less than prodigious, with only a slight case of repetition throughout the whole of the album. Unfortunately most of the repetition is from a more hardcore style, a simplistic riff played with little or no change for the course of a song. The drumming, is as most death metal music good, not exceptional in a genre plagued with the best drummers to walk the earth, and is slightly mediocre when taken into account. The vocals are, like the guitar, are a mix of genres, this time a death/melodic death variant, and black metal. The vocals are more melodic death than guttural death, as they are not only intelligible, but tend to halt more abruptly than the typical growl of death metal. The vocals are less than innovative, rather trite and banal compared most of the European melodic death, and are far less harsh than anything from a death metal band I've heard. They typically sound like a poor man's "At the Gates" most of the time, except for the effect of destroying the rhythm of the riffs they produce. I say that you should buy it.
