Free Music Review: Why Have I Never Heard Of This Wonderful Artist Before?

A close friend of mine, a brilliant writer and essayist, received a fan letter and a copy of HYDRANGEA from Kate Jacobs, and was enormously taken with her music. She lent me the CD and, after ordering it, I promptly ran to a record store to buy whatever else I could find that bore her name. Kate Jacobs has immediately become one of my favorite musicians and songwriters. Her lyrics are beguiling and full of pockets of naked truth, her melodies lyrical and irresistable, her harmonies gorgeous. Never depressing thanks to the bouncing melodies, though serious emotional issues are fully addressed in the songs, is a big plus for the depression-prone introspective listener. Tinged with a streak of country-music, Kate Jacobs is a gem of a song-writer and performer, and it is a sad statement about the music industry in this country that I only came to hear of her in such a round-about and unlikely way.
