Free Music Review: Kate Wolf's best

This is my favourite album, by anybody, of at least the last 20 years. It only makes me wonder what more Kate might have done, if she had lived to produce more. A beautiful voice, and, if possible, an even more beautiful song writer.

By the time Wolf recorded Poet's Heart in 1985, she had spent more than a decade honing her songcraft, and it shows. Delicate lyrical lines blend seamlessly with (and are accented to perfection by) guitarist-mandolinist Nina Gerber's expert picking. "In China or a Woman's Heart (There Are Places No One Knows)" is an exceptionally beautiful tale of lifelong love, while "All He Ever Saw Was You" and the title track addresses loneliness with sympathy and grace. Spare arrangements and honest words are a winning combination in the hands of an artist of Wolf's caliber. -- Alexandra RussellFolk Music CDs
