Free Music Notes for Katharine McPhee

Free Music Review: Top-notch first effort from Idol's sweetheart
Hit: 5 Stars

Many new artists do not have complete creative control over their debut albums. One can remember Kelly Clarkson's debut - an enjoyable, but bland mix of pop, pop-infused rock, and pop-infused R&B - and then compare it to her 5x platinum second release, "Breakaway," to illustrate what happens when artists write and have more of a say in their musical style.

In the case of Katharine McPhee, she crafted most of this album with top producers and writers Nate 'Danja' Hills (a Timbaland protege), The Underdogs, Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey), and others. At first, McPhee's label was accepting open song submissions and after McPhee expressed dissatisfaction with the songs, the label sent her to Virginia Beach - and rightfully so!

McPhee's first album is not perfect, as many debuts from artists who are brand-new to recording, writing, and well, fame, are not. However, the mix of power ballads, 'rhythmic pop' (as she has described it), and pop-R&B has produced a catchy album that does show off her golden pipes. There certainly are many tracks that stand out as potential radio-friendly singles. Two worth mentioning - "Ordinary World" - a beautiful, emotional ballad and "Open Toes" - the ode to sexy shoes that fans seem to either love or hate which happens to be THE dance track of the album.

This album deserves a good, hard listen. It's one of the best debuts from a new artist I have heard in a long time.

Hit: 5 Stars

The editorial review nails the essence of this cd. Nice mix of r&b influenced uptempo sassy tracks and bluesy pop ballad gems. Nicely paced with the ballads scattered throughout and then more at the end. "Love Story" kicks things off leaving me on first listen wondering what to expect from this....then "Over It" which is VERY radio friendly, current and addictive...after one listen she owns this sound, her voice sells it and will get her the airplay to sell this album. 'Open Toes" is so much more than what most "customers" wrote. The beat is infectious and the egotistical lyrics are what they are - it's a fun great sounding song.
"Home" is a nice straightforward ballad nicely delivered. "Not Ur Girl" crys for a nice remix (though nice on its own). "Each Other" and "Everywhere I Go" sound like Mariah Carey wrote them (she didn't)....again Katherines' voice makes them her own. "Dangerous" is another song negatively reviewed by some "customers"....it's a good remix ready song. "Ordinary World", "Better Off Alone" (bluesy nice) and "Neglected" deserve more than 5 stars, actually alot of the cuts do! They are excellent ballads with an original delivery. The lyrics throughout this cd are excellent and the mood is different from anything I've ever heard. It's a fun yet thoughtful, heartfelt cd. Worth the wait indeed....highly recommended!

Free Music Review: Fall in love with Katharine all over again
Hit: 5 Stars

Katharine McPhee had a secret. You see, she really wasn't just that wholesome, pretty girl-next-store who wished she could venture somewhere over the rainbow. She was also a sexy and senual 22 year old woman who grew up listening to R&B tunes and singing along with Mariah Carey. So it's only natural that, when given the opportunity, she wanted to make an album of music that would appeal to her as listener as well as a vocalist.

Kat was lucky enough to have the full commitment of RCA behind her to hook her up with the some of the best writers and producers in the business. And the results are magic! For the first time we get to hear the REAL Katharine McPhee. Her clear, rich, powerful vocals, soaring melismas, gorgeous layered harmonies combine with great beats and addictive hooks in the medium and uptempo numbers - standouts are 'Love Story', 'Over It', 'Open Toes', 'Not Ur Girl'- and send chills in the luscious ballads - 'Home', 'Ordinary World', 'Better Off Alone'.

This album is not just a collection of 12 songs, it is a coherent work that embodies the essence of Katharine McPhee. It may not be what you expected- I know it wasn't for me. It's fresh, it's surprising, it's current, and it's the best thing that's happened to pop music in a very long time. And it's made me fall in love with Kat all over again.

Free Music Review: Let the Rump Shaking Begin!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was always a huge Kat fan and nothing has changed. I'm glad she stemmed away from the AI image she created. Everyone's first album has been a morose pop album. Kelly Clarkson, pop and strays from playing most of the album. Rueben, even though has sold the most albums (first album) of all the AI winners, the album wasn't hot. Fantasia didn't stray to far from the image she had on the show. Carrie and Taylor pretty much mad the albums they were going to.

Kat takes the next step in her evolution of a superstar. She has made a very appealing album. Each song is great and amazing. This album shows Kat's true self. R&B and Pop are melded together great. People who are posting negative reviews can be quiet. Boo hoo, she doesn't sing Barbra Streisand inspired ballads and singer/songwriter crap. Get over it. This album rocks.

The stand out tracks on the album are (in my opinion), "Love Story," a great old style R&B/Funk track with a great hook. "Open Toes," though cheesy, is a good 'Rumpshaker,' along with "Do What You Do." "Home" and "Ordinary World" are great ballads. "Not Ur Girl" is reminecent of "Love Story" and great vocals. Lastly, the Babyface produced "Everywhere I Go," is a great song about heartache, reminicent of Toni Braxton.

Naysayers can go away. Kat is here to stay!

Free Music Review: Excellent!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

i like every song and that happens rarely these days even with my favorite artists.
I m glad she got to work with producers and songwriters such as Nate "Danja" Hills (Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado), Babyface, Kara Dioguardi (Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera), The Underdogs (Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx) and Walter Afanasieff (Celine Dion) instead of making a jazz/standards album. Don't get me wrong I think she could sing ANYTHING but I don't think it make her the popstar that she wants to be...
and people seem to agree since i have yet to find a bad (prefessional) review from major paper/magazine.

i m also very impressed with her vocal performances on this album. they' re flawless and give me goosebumps (especially "Home" , "Everywhere i go" and "Ordinary world")

my favorites as of right now are "Everwhere i go", "Neglected", "Ordinary World", "Love Story" and "Better off alone" but like i said i love every single song. there aren t any fillers. imo at least.
i m also hoping for "open toes" as a single asap.

I think this will please both the American idol audience and new fans.

Well done Katharine!
