Free Music Notes for Katharine McPheeFree Music Review: Certainly Not What Was Expected...and Thank God for That Hit: 5 Stars
If one were to have guessed what type of songs would be on Katharine McPhee's debut album, two names would have undoubtedly come to mind--Celine Dion and Whitney Houston. Thankfully for the American Public, an Idol contestant FINALLY spoke up for herself and it's about time. Before Ms. McPhee's eponymous disc, one could be sure of one thing of an Idol-produced album--blandness. It was always puzzling why these contestants, who are in their twenties, always opted not to put out an album for people their own age--that would, after all, make sense. Well, Katharine's debut is neither bland nor age-inapporiate. While some songs tend to lean a little too much toward 90s Mariah, most are fun and cathcy offerings that engage the listener. People should be glad that the American public is not subjected to another banal Idol album. Instead, one is bombarded with cries that Katharine opted for style over substance...well, guess what, substance does not sell. How else can one explain the success of Britney Spears or now, even Ashley Tisdale? Katharine at LEAST needs to be given credit for trying to acheive success. After all, how many twenty year olds even know who Judy Garland is?
Free Music Review: Diversity NOT uncertainty Hit: 5 Stars
I've read plenty of reviews lately that criticize Katharine McPhee's debut release saying the album lacks focus and for me these comments are entirely off base. As a fan of Katharine from the first time I saw her on my television, Simon's words at her audition keep echoing back to me -- she was "very current." Sure she made her stamp on the show by singing a range of classics but she always had the potential for more and this CD shows off that Mr. Cowell's ominous words proved to be very true. The album is fun, lively and perfectly suitable for today's 14-30 crowd. Poppy dance tunes like Open Toes, Not Ur Girl, Dangerous, and Do What You Do blend seamlessly into the club scene and were made to be blasted on a beautiful day in the car with the windows rolled down. Older fans and/or those missing the Katharine of American Idol fame can appreciate the beautiful, sweeping ballads called Home and Ordinary World. On the whole the album presents a diverse collection of songs that keep the listener's finger off the next track button because you won't want to skip any songs on here. There's a song for every mood and occasion so pick this one up today. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Enjoyable Listening Hit: 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed last year's season of Idol. It was by far the best group of young talent this show has offered to date and will be hard to beat as most of my family and friends say as well. The one thing I am disappointed in is the competition between the fan bases after the show has been over as evident in reviews on this site as well as others. I enjoy all types of music and each of the albums released so far has been that. I have personally downloaded songs from each of their albums and I wish all of them success as I think that there is room in the music world for all of them to do well. As for Katharine, even though this is quite different from some of the tunes she sang on Idol it, is very good. The ballads definitely showcase her vocals and the dance beat material is fun and energetic to listen to. I absolutely loved it and there are no filler songs on this one for me. I believe she has the voice to have a long lasting career because she can sing all types of music. If that weren't the case then artists such as Andrea Bocelli and David Foster would not have invited her to sing at their concerts.
Free Music Review: One of the most Underrated Albums Ever Hit: 5 Stars
I don't watch Idol and didn't know who Katharine McPhee was until I caught The House Bunny on TV one night. She sang a song at the end, and I thought...I think singing is her thing (her acting was cute though). I put it out of my mind until I decided to Google her and found she had released two albums already! I have to say that I was a little apprehensive about this particular one giving a few of the recent reviews and the fact that it doesn't seem to have sold too well, but after listening to it...I am quite SHOCKED at many of the comments. This album is amazing! It's not just pop/R&B, but it has some amazing ballads with soul and emotion. She covers a lot of genres with ease, and I guess I like that eclectic quality to this bunch of songs. And her voice is out of this world. She's a mixture between Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, and Sarah McLachlan. Very unique. My favorite songs are Neglected, Everywhere I Go, Ordinary World, and Better Off Alone (I'm a sucker for the soulful ballads). Hopefully, she'll find great success with the new album, and people will revisit this lost gem!
Free Music Review: We're Not In Kansas Anymore... Hit: 5 Stars
Those were the words off of Katharine's Official web site not long ago...
It's the truth though, isn't it??? Somewhere Over the Rainbow is over!! So I think everyone needs to realize that Katharine is not on American Idol anymore. She is 22 years old and is being "current", she is not trying to be an "old soul". Bottom line, she's doing what she wants...and its working!!
I understand that people fell in love with her ballads on Idol, but there are equal ammounts of ballads and more upbeat songs on this album. My mother, who isn't into songs like "Love Story" or "Open Toes"...LOVES the ballads "Better Off Alone" and "Home". There is something for EVERYONE on this album.
To me this album is AMAZING!!! I can listen to it from beginning to end without getting bored. At first I was surprised to hear the direction she was going, but after hearing it, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
**HEY, think back to Miss Kelly Clarkson...I believe no one expected her to go the way she did either....WORKED FOR HER DIDN'T IT!!!**
