This CD Kathleen Battle Sings Mozart produced with James Levine and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra combine both standard repetoire along with the rarely heard and performed Zaide and the infrequent Abduction of the Seraglio. This historic recording places her as a solid singer in this repetoire. The listener is reminded that such an artist had a relatively short career due to her temper and disagreements with impresarios and the Metropolitan opera management, most notably Joseph Volpe. Ms Battle's technique is solid with much attention to detail and musicality. This pairing of Levine - Battle is a surefire reason for success between two remarkable musicians. One should include this treasure in their collection as her ability to interpret music from Mozart to the Bel Canto style only serves to highlight the capabilities of this American Diva. In its unfortunate that "Diva" has taken on an unforunate connotation shared by the likes of Calls and Battle as well as their male counterparts such as Pavarotti who frequently cancelled concerts at the last moment. One should cherish these recorings as testaments to the vocal accomplishments.
