Free Music Review: She deserves the glory (and the dough) Hit: 4 Stars
Asking for Flowers is an overall solid album by Kathleen Edwards. Two of the centerpieces are songs about real life murders. Alicia Ross is told from the point of view of the dying girl to her mother. Oh Canada is searing and angry at those who "don't have to believe what stays out of your world". The Cheapest Key and I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory are solid catchy tunes about not getting appreciated in a relationship. Scared at Night is another strong lyrically driven song, and the songwriting throughout is the major strenghth of this album. Her voice is good but not great, and the production and musicianship compliment the lyrics without overwhelming the storytelling. There are a couple of forgettable numbers towards the end (Run,Goodnight California) but overall worth a listen.
Free Music Review: Never Fails to Astound me Hit: 4 Stars
I've been a Kathleen Edwards fan for some time now and at first I found this CD disappointing. I loved her other two so much that I thought I must not be listening hard enough. Sure enough, the more I listened to it, the more amazing it became to me. Songs like Alicia Ross and Scared At Night are haunting and soulful. Kathleen is truly one of the most gifted singer/songwriters of our time and I'm so glad I've had the privilege of hearing her.
Free Music Review: Kathleen Edwards' best yet Hit: 4 Stars
Downloaded this today and just finished giving it a front to back listen. Outstanding. A nice mix of up-tempo tunes and slower more contemplative songs. I love Kathleen's voice- soft when she wants to be, pure, straight up, unaffected.
The last track, "Goodnight, California" is a Neil Young-esque thing of beauty.
