Free Music Notes for CoalFree Music Review: Passionate and Honest Taste of History Hit: 5 StarsWhen is an album so much more than an album?
When you mix it with some history. This could very well be one of the most important albums to come out in a long time.
While Mattea could have easily put out another country album, she instead turned in a rather interesting direction, and show cased some of the most passionate songs of the past.
Coal consists of some of the most famous coal mining songs in history, with Mattea's vocals stripped down with just her strong vocals, a minimal instruments from the time these songs were written.
By far the stand out track on this album is is Blue Diamond Mines, Mattea has never sounded so real, and the instrumental is amazing.
This album will surely keep you warm on a cold night.
Free Music Review: Amazing! Hit: 5 StarsI think this is the best work Kathy has ever done. Very moving...I especially love "Comming of the Roads". But every track is great..not a "skip over" in the bunch.
Free Music Review: Fantastic Hit: 5 StarsA great album, I own six or seven of Kathy's albums and this ranks up with the best. The music is great while letting her voice shine while she sings a great selection of songs. I bought a copy for my father, who grew up in a West Virginia coal town, I am sure he will connect with Kathy's tribute.
Free Music Review: Amazing Singer, Amazing Songs Hit: 5 StarsI just heard Kathy Mattea sing some of the songs from her new album "Coal: at Mountain Stage (it will air June 1 or so on NRP). She was performing at a near sold-out concert in Ashland Kentucky at the gorgeous Paramont Theater. The songs she selected from this album and her voice are terrific. She sang Hazel Dicken's "Black Lung" a capella at the end and it was the most amazing performance I have been to. You could have heard a pin drop in a theatre of 2000 people and then they errupted in applause. Every song was a winner that she included, including many I have heard others sing. Kathy makes the material her own. I would have bought the album then and there and I am buying it today since it is finally out.
