Free Music Review: PLEASANT VOICE, DECENT SONGS AND OUTSTANDING PLAYING

The more 'purer' forms of country music have only a limited appeal for me, I much prefer country music when it is fused with blues, folk, gospel etc. Although I like KM's voice, I have steered clear of buying her albums because, based upon what little I have heard, her music is a bit 'too country' for my tastes (or so I thought). However, I came across this album by accident and, having listened to the samples and read other reviews, I decided to buy it.
KM has a rich and warm alto voice; it's a very pleasant voice too - I thought, on the lower notes, sounding a bit like Mary-Chapin Carpenter. Her singing often has a soulful quality but, if you like your vocals with more edge and grit, you should look elsewhere. The playing by her band is exceptionally good and the backing vocals, particularly by the Settles Connection, are first class. I wouldn't describe 'Straight Out Of Nowhere' as a country album - it's more an album of quality pop songs, some of which have a slight 'rootsy' flavour. The album has a nice balance between slow, mid and up-tempo songs.
Some comments about my favourite tracks :
GIMME SHELTER (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards) - More atmospheric and a little less bluesy sounding than the Rolling Stones' original, but a fine rendition nevertheless. No lead electric guitar but the short acoustic guitar solo by Bill Cooley is phenomenal; also, listen out for the bass flute accompaniment by Randy Leago. Pretty good harmony vocals, and the song still rocks.
HURT SOME (Tia Sillers and Mark Sanders) - A slow tempo song with bluesy and soulful vocals by KM (and on the low notes, sounding quite sultry); 'laid back' accompaniment from the band (some nice playing of acoustic guitar and electric piano) and the Settles Connection.
DOWN ON THE CORNER (John Fogerty) - I've always liked this song; this version is more polished than the original by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Fine vocals by KM and the Settles Connection, accomplished playing with syncopated rhythms much in evidence.
GIVE IT AWAY (Kathy Mattea, Bob Halligan Jr. and Jon Vezner) - A really gorgeous song with a poignant chorus exquisitely sung by KM. Restrained and very tasteful playing by the band.
WADE IN THE WATER (trad. arr. Bill Cooley and Kathy Mattea) - Mid-tempo song with a gospel 'feel'. KM's vocals are OK, but I thought they sounded a little strained at times. This track is a real musical 'feast' - with short solos featuring bass guitar, organ, electric piano, acoustic guitar and harmonica. During the last 2 minutes or so, the musicians really cut loose, 'aided and abetted' by the Settles Connection lending their strong backing vocals (and handclaps) to the proceedings.
Although there are no really bad songs on the album, I found the remaining songs less compelling - BUT, these seem to be much preferred by some other reviewers. They do, however, showcase KM's vocal strengths, and they all have intimate and thoughtful lyrics. 'Right Outta Nowhere' and 'Love Is Not Through With Me Yet' are very pretty songs; 'I Hope You're Happy Now' is notable for it's fine piano arrangement; and the lilting 'Live It' features some impressive acoustic guitar and fiddle playing.
I've come to the conclusion that, by ignoring KM's music, I have been 'missing out', and there are two further albums that are on my list of Christmas presents. I have given my youngest daughter strict instructions that, should she buy me any CDs, at least one of these should be either 'Roses' or 'Love Travels' - this should help to redress the balance and, with a bit of luck, ensure that I don't get socks (again).
I can't be quite as enthusiastic about this album as some reviewers, and I have to say that it was the musicianship which heightened my listening experience; had it not been for this, I would have given 'Straight Out Of Nowhere' a 3 or 3.5-star rating. Nevertheless, I am willing to explore more of KM's music and I look forward to her new album which is due for release in Spring 2008.
