Free Music Notes for Piece By PieceFree Music Review: Beluga from Georgia Hit: 5 Stars
Ms. Melua is from Georgia. Her voice is quite like the Swede, Lisa Ekdahl. Neither has range or power; both have a little girl voice and plenty of finesse. Both have musical partners. In Ms. Melua's case it is Mike Batt who is to her what Nelson Riddle was to Linda Rondstadt, except that, in addition to arranging and conducting and coaching, he writes songs. Most of this album are her and/or his songs. They are well written and well treated. They are are a careful team abnd do not cut corners. Mr. Batt, among many other things, worked with Steeleye Span and Art Garfunkel long ago.
The original sogs are interesting and liquid pleasant in rendition. But my favorite cut is her rendering "Blues in the Night", which some might remember from Looney Tunes cartoons many decades past; "My mama done tole me..." it starts. Knowing she cannot belt it, instead she works it.
One short note on Steve Sale's engineering because another reviewer was crabbing about reverb and above all, clipping. Perhaps because I bought it on vinyl, but I hear none of these defects. My set is revealing, and it reveals excellent engineering, considering the largeish ensemble Mr. Batt has assembeled. Fear not, unless the CD really is badly made.
Free Music Review: MAYBE MY SEARCH IS LAST! Hit: 5 Stars
I love women, but in music I have always preferred male vocalists!
I know that Ella Fitzgerald,Patsy Cline ,Joni Mitchell ,Aretha Franklin are great ,but I feel better listening to Donald Fagen ,Smokey Robinson ,Michael McDonald, Todd Rundgren and Daryl Hall.
I feel female singers are sometimes too sweet (Olivia Newton-John ,Diana Ross) or too strong (Bonnie Tyler ,Tina Turner),too professional (Barbra Streisand ,Ella and Aretha) or totally unprofessional (you know what I mean!).
This is only my personal opinion and I must tell I like hundreds of songs sung from women and I love Motown Girls ,but I have not more then 2/3 cds of female singers.
Katie Melua is non very famous in Italy :for many months she was for me only a new voice without a name who sang a song about bikes. Finally I captured something similar to Katie Medura (?),but as always Google helped me and today I was listening to Peace by peace cd on my car on the way to work!
It's better thatI thought!
This girl has voice and personality,is sweet and strong ,and sometimes so naive that she seems coming from another era!
She's great and is already in the list of my favorite (male and very older then her)singers!
Free Music Review: Even Better Than Her Debut Hit: 5 Stars
I gave Katie Melua's debut album, "Call Off the Search", a five-star review, but I honestly like this new one even more! Writing in USA Today, veteran critic Elysa Gardner noted that Katie "has a naturally expressive voice", and I must say that I agree wholeheartedly. To that, I would add that I find Katie's voice to be exceptionally beautiful, and her performances to possess an intimate quality that is rare among contemporary pop artists.
The songs on "Piece By Piece" run the gamut from blues standards to uptempo pop-jazz to folky social-comment numbers. Among my favorites are the CD's opener, "Shy Boy", the catchy love songs "Nine Million Bicycles" and "Halfway Up the Hindu Kush", and the contemporary folk stylings of "I Cried For You" and the title track, "Piece By Piece". Throughout the CD, Katie is backed up by first-rate musicians (particularly Chris Spedding on guitar). I would highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys young jazz-influenced pop artists. Hopefully, Katie Melua will soon be as well-known in the US as she already is in Europe and South Africa!
Free Music Review: Terrific CD Hit: 5 Stars
My 21 year-old daughter found this CD under "employee favorites" at a local music store near her university, and bought it for her mother. Luckily, I listened to it. It is perhaps the best CD I have discovered in 5 years. Katie Melua is a bit like Norah Jones, but far better. Every cut on this CD is excellent. It has flavors of jazz, pop, folk, and blues. Her voice is fantastic, and the instrumental is just as good. Although musical tastes vary (as you can see from other reviews) I doubt very much that you will disappointed by purchasing this music. In fact, most will love it. JUST BUY IT!
Free Music Review: Just Like Heaven Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard Katie while watching the movie "Just Like Heaven"! Did they make the movie after listening to Katie sing this song? I was hooked from the first note, I almost fast forwarded the movie to the credits so I could find out who sang this song. I found it hauntingly beautiful and the CD doesn't let you down. Every song is great. Listening to this CD is an experience for me, it takes me to another place that is dreamy, sexy, and unhurried. I kinda get the jazzy definition but I am an old blues man and this music fits me just right. I can't wait to hear her next album!!!
