So, I bought this cd quite a while ago (when 'I Kissed A Girl' started getting really popular and mainstream), listened to it once, and tossed it with another pile of cds to collect dust. Then recently for some reason (not totally sure why... maybe because her singles keep coming and are awesome)... Anyway--after another listen I found that I like it more than before. And after a couple listens, I'm loving this cd, always want to listen to it. Her voice is very unique today, yet there is something familiar about it. It's like there is some retro hint in the sound of it mixed with something new... If that makes any sense... She wrote or co-wrote every song on this cd. She is very tongue-in-cheek in her lyrics, and they are very fun. Her lyrics definitely don't sound like some of the recycled themes playing on the radio all the time. She might be telling the same story sometimes, but it sounds new. After getting hooked on this, I even found myself searching for more music from her on iTunes and found some great stuff there as well (check out her stuff with The Matrix).
- 'One of the Boys' is the first song on the cd, but is not really my favorite. I usually skip over it, but she mentions spiders and belching. I can't really get on board with that personally, but I'm sure many others will love this song.
- And obviously 'I Kissed A Girl' and 'Hot N Cold' are very fun and catchy songs, with her first single being a little on the risque side. 'Hot N Cold' is co-written by Max Martin, who is always churning out pop hits with popular singers out there (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, etc), but it seems like her music is in a category of pop all itself. And there are other great songs on here that are so Katy Perry sounding (you'll get that after listening to her cd), but sound different than the singles.
- 'Waking Up In Vegas' is another fun song, where she's telling a story about making some mistakes in Vegas with a guy friend... Hmmm... Good lyrics, catchy beat, and gotta love her voice.
- 'Thinking of You' is another single, but I felt that it doesn't quite fit into the same category as her other singles before this. This is a slow song that is raw with emotion. Great lyrics. Her voice really gives this song the emotion it needs for the lyrics and is a big part of what makes the song so good. The video for this is really great too, but grab a tissue or two. And I've been playing this song so much--it's even my ringtone!
- 'Mannequin' is a song that is about a guy who just doesn't seem to feel anything. Haven't all of us ladies experienced this? An example of her lyrical talent: "I keep knocking on wood/Hoping there's a real boy inside" Love it!
- 'Ur So Gay' is definitely a sassy song. It's in reference to a guy she's dating/dated who is metrosexual and apparently annoying. The song is very catchy with some funny lyrics, although unfortunately a couple get blanked out even though this said nothing about being edited. The songs are so good I can't hold that against this cd! Sample lyric: "I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf"
- 'If You Can Afford Me' is a fun song about money being important in a relationship, but she never sounds snobby or pretentious in this song. You can tell it's just in fun. It's a song that will ruffle some people's feathers if they take it too seriously (like many of her songs I think).
- 'Lost' is another slow song. I almost like her slow ones better, but then I listen to her upbeat, fun songs... and I like those too! She is really great at pulling off both styles effortlessly. She really sings with passion on these songs. This is a very good one, but not my favorite slow one (that would be 'Thinking of You').
- 'Self Inflicted' is about a relationship or relationships that leave scars, but how we allow them to happen. Sometimes you know something or someone is bad for you or that it won't work out, but you go for it anyway (hence it being self inflicted). Good one, but not my favorite... Although the songs keep growing on me.
- 'I'm Still Breathing' is another slow one. It is a really good one. You can feel the emotion in it. It sounds like a suicidal song at first, but then you realize it's about the death of a relationship and that pain. "Say something funny/Say something sweet/But don't say that you loved me/I'm still breathing/But we've been dead for a while"
This song has such a haunted sound to it--amazing. It's quickly becoming one of my favorites. This one really shows her talent.
- 'Fingerprints' is the last song. A song about leaving her mark on the world (I think she has already). It has a good message. The song sounds a little punk, but still pop. The chorus is upbeat. Not my favorite out of all the others, but still good and it's still growing on me too with each listen.
This cd is one you need to listen to a couple of times before you realize how much you love it, and then it just hits you when you find yourself wanting to listen to it all the time. After becoming addicted to this cd and other songs I've found of hers or featuring her on iTunes, it's clear that she will have a good career. I can't wait to hear more from her.
Highlights: I Kissed a Girl, Thinking of You, Ur So Gay, Self Inflicted, I'm Still Breathing... but all are worth a listen (or a couple...).
