Hit: 5 Stars

This is definitely a well thrown out there album composed of great lyrics and a very powerful voice from katy. I honestly don't know why people criticize so much and give this album bad ratings only because it ain't revolutionary, well not everything that comes out there is..it is just as good as others were, and there isn't nothing wrong with it...there are some crappy singers out there who don't even know the meaning of singing and yet they get good rave ratings...how dies that work huh..? anyhow..tha album came along pretty well, this girl knew how to pull it off pretty well, with some amazing tracks in here that address themes of love no one had ever addressed in particular ways...

One of the boys: 7/10 Not that of a great song, just okay...it shows katy being a tough girl who is parallel to being a boy, sort of a tomboy yet even though she is this way she wants to show she still likes to be a girl, and that there ain;t anything wrong with being a strong woman. the message it has its pretty well delivered i guess, though a different beat would have saved the song a bit..

I Kissed a girl: 10/10 great song..she definitely wonders about bisexuality in here, true being bi on these days is not well seen, something I consider immoral myself but even though it deals with this, the song that is, it is extremely infectious, very out there and edgy, which is what makes it cool, after all is just a song, and I love the way she depicted the song in the video, she kept it very low profile and very respectful to the audience. Smart move.

Waking up in vegas: one of my favorites..deff a great song, nothing groundbreaking but the usual and known cliche of vegas...but the beats and the way she puts it with her vocals and her lyrics is very effetive, besides I sense the song to have a "reading between the lines" kinda thing going on, of not giving up on things we already decided to do but to carry on with them.

Thinking of you: 10/10 I dont know if its a single or not but there is a video for it...anyways, the song is a very nice rock oriented ballad kind of thing, is terribly catchy and has amazing vocals from katy.

Mannequin: haha...probably one of the best songs she has in here, and should deff be a single...it is very radio friendly ad has this really catchy chorus and besides it has these hidden connotations and suggestions I would say that make it funny to listen to...for example when she sings: "I wish i could turn you on" to what she immediately adds "with a battery" haha, just way too amusing, of how you get the notion she's unto something but turns out to be the corniest thing you could come up with. Deff a very effective and cool song, besides it denotes us men as mannequins, wooden made, kinda like the pinoccio thing going on, on how we sometimes we don't give a darn for the girl we have no matter waht they do for us we just don't consider them good enough...kinda a bit of a slap in the face I gues...no? well, haha that's y perception of it, check it out yourself, maybe you get something diff out of it :)

Ur so gay: 10/10 fun, amusing but not that idk...cool sometimes, the riff is pretty good, so are the lyrics but sometimes the beats get too monotonous, her voice is what saves the song.

Hot n' cold: 1000000000/10 demands to be a single as well, she just delivers the message of the song sooo well, and describes ups and downs in a relationship as well as to the point of contrasting it with bipolar disorder o.0 hahaha

If you can afford me: 10/10 getting a bit over her head here huh..haha it is a tremendously well put otgether song & her vocals are just so good in here she shows her vocal range, showing the way of singing to a normal range and sometimes switching to higher notes. typical pop rock song course

Lost: 9/10....just any other ballad, nothing special besides her vocals which are amazing in here as well, very rough and powerful at the same time.

Self inflicted: 10/10 very poppy i would say, well thrown out there too, very emotional but she pulls off to make it as positive as she can, her vocals...geez no comments, she just knows how to sing, undeniable.

I'm still breathing: 8/10 least I hear in the album, her vocals are great though, but the song is just too generic, too plain.

Fingerprints: 10/10 fun song to listen to and to close the album as well, she sounds very garbage like, the band of course haha, and kind of avril like at the same time...though their vocals cannot certainly compare, my apologies to katy perry who actually sings and doesn't whine just like avril does..

overall a very cool well put toegther album, worth eevry single penny of your money, definitely a must have, even though many claim it'll get old later, whoh cares the album is very uptempo and it'll have you amused for a while, a long one I should say cause I've been listening to it for the past days and not even bored yet....not even a bit.

Free Music Review: Good mainstream debut!
Hit: 5 Stars

Here is my track by track review of "One of the Boys" by Katy Perry. After selling more than 5 million copies worldwide, this album has cemented Katy into the elites of pop artists.

1. One of the Boys - The title track, this dance song deals with Katy hanging out alot with guys, but really just wanting to be a girl to be in a relationship with one of the guys she likes. In short, she doesn't want to be just One of the Boys anymore. This song is extremely catchy and a great starter. Hopefully an indicator of things to come!! 4/5
2. I Kissed A Girl - We've all heard it, with mixed reactions. I don't necessarily love the message that she is conveying, but the point is that this song is addicting and will be stuck in your head for days on end...and fun to shout along to!! 3/5
3. Waking Up In Vegas - A Fun, face-paced dance track, Katy Perry recalls a trip to the infamous city of sin with her boyfriend, chronically telling the listener about all the different things they did. It is an AMAZING song all around! 4/5
4. Thinking of You - Whoaaa. Slowww Dowwwwwnnnnnnn. Katy takes a MAJOR turn from the rest of the album at this point with this ballad. It is moving and telling, and I truly love it (and am disappointed that it did not do well on the charts!!) The music video is MOVING, TOUCHING, and you NEED to see it to complete the expirience! 5/5
5. Mannequin - Another slower/tamer song, this song is still good nonethless. "I wanna hit you just to see if you cry" exemplifies the rest of the song, with electronic beats and angsty lyrics. A good song, but a skipper. 3/5
6. Ur So Gay - She released this song a while ago on the internet exclusively, and I have to the say that the lyrics are just...clever!! I wish that it wasn't censored though...because there is really no need...anyways, a funny, humorous track!! 3/5
7. Hot N Cold - Her second single, I would venture to say that this song is the single best song on the entire album. A fun dance song (like many others) and it really exemplifies what the whole album is about--just having a good time!! 5/5
8. If You Can Afford Me - Another fast-faced song, this one is pretty fun to listen to. "If you wanna ride, just name your price, don't play cheap with your heart" I like this song alot as well!! 4/5
9. Lost - Katy slows it down a bit, with the music-box like "Lost". This song is SO emotional and PERFECTLY delivered, which makes it easily the best slow song on the album. 5/5
10. Self Inflicted - Stepping up the tempo (anyone else feeling a little nauseous!!?), this song is another SOLID track. It is almost filler, but if it classified as such, it is some of the best filler on the album (which means...it really isn't filler!!!!!) 3/5
11. I'm Still Breathing - Another emotionally tinged ballad, this one is probably ranked lower than Thinking of You and Lost in my eyes (well...ears i guess). 2/5
12. Fingerprints - But still good filler. =) 2.5/5

Verdict,

A strong album from Katy Perry, you NEEEEEEDDDD TO BUY IT!!!! You will not regret it!

Free Music Review: I surprised myself
Hit: 5 Stars

When I heard Hot And Cold on the car radio I recalled liking I Kissed A Girl during summer 2008, so I bought the album on the strength of those two songs, on the offchance that I would like some of the rest of it.

I must add here that I am a 56-year old male British accountant, with taste firmly rooted in the 60s, and the last album I bought where I unequivocally enjoyed every track was Blue Hotel by Fox in 1977.

Well, now there is another one. One Of The Boys joins a very small club - there isn't a track on it which I don't like.

Let me get my reservations out of the way first. While I very much like the quality of Katy Perry's voice - she's a husky pop shouter with a delicate breathiness in her upper register (I suspect, from Youtube clips, that she requires some studio assistance to deliver a vocal take with no tuning issues, but that's not a major problem on a record!) - I don't much care for a) the Alanis Morisette-style vocal mannerisms (viz. the register-changing yodel), b) the croaking groan at the ends of lines and c) the intakes of breath (stylistic choice, or poor mic technique and/or poor production?). I'm also not a big fan of breaking words up ar tificially (if you see what I mean).

But I love the songs - each and every one of them. Every one has a strong melodic hook, and I love melody more than anything. The lyrics, though sometimes gauche, are funny, witty, and often heartfelt (and, even when not, they still tell an entertaining story - how can you resist an album where the second line is "I can belch the alphabet, just double dog dare me")?). And they are delivered with gusto and good humour in arrangements which are mostly spot on, if occasionally a little anonymous. I was delighted to see that Katy had a hand in writing all of them (and two of them solo).

I had a quick look at critics - they seem to be centred on ciriticing the fact that these songs are exactly what they are - fun. I don't think any big statement is intended here. After some seesawing back and forth, Katy has found the image she was looking for - Fruit, Betty Grable, big eyes, Minnie Mouse bows, and good-humoured theatricality, and this is reflected not only in her visual impact, but also in the material presented.

I loved every second of this album, and I can't wait for the next one.

Free Music Review: One of the...best albums of 2008 so far!
Hit: 5 Stars

Katy Perry hasn't been one to disappoint long-time fans (including myself) in the past. That said, she doesn't do that on her debut major-label record, 'One of the Boys'.

While many reviewers of this particular record have thrown around the words 'attention-seeker' and 'desperate' (rather loosely, I might add), I disagree. The album's tongue-in-cheek and sometimes controversial lyrics give it a unique touch among countless teen pop and bubblegum-flavored albums, which are essentially a dime a dozen in today's modern pop world. The album is hook-heavy and slickly produced, but Katy's raw, genuine talent for both singing and writing are quite apparent, mostly in the cleverness of songs like "Waking Up in Vegas" and "Fingerprints", which rank among the album's top songs. Songs like "I Kissed a Girl" and "Ur So Gay" (not-so-ironically, the album's lead singles) give the biggest dose of controversy to the album, with Katy (embarrassingly yet humorously) yelling the word "penis" at the end of the latter track.

While hardcore fans of Perry have long embraced her quirky personality, one worry that I have personally is that incoming fans may be turned off by it, especially since her persona appears on ever square inch of the record from front to back. Nonetheless, 'One of the Boys' places Katy in front of today's modern up-and-coming female solo artists such as Colbie Caillat and Sara Bareilles because the album has serious tracks (including standout "Thinking of You') and fun, upbeat tracks ("Hot N Cold") that combine all that is popular on Top 40 radio at the moment - pop, rock, and dance music.

In "Fingerprints", Katy sings "I want you to remember me"; well, that's exactly what I predict is going to happen for years to come. Welcome to the big leagues, Ms. Perry.

Free Music Review: More than one of the boys . . . She's a Sensational Hit !
Hit: 5 Stars

Katy Perry's One of the Boys is definitely one of the top CDs of 2008.

Why? Because her lyrics are crisp, witty, & genuine, the music bright & foot-tapping memorable, and the studio production masterful. Taken together, this is a great example of a true artist who holds nothing back & brings a fresh energy to an increasingly self-absorbed & cliche music scene.

I myself enjoyed all of the songs. My favs of course are "I Kissed a Girl" with it's driving beat & haughty lyrics and "Ur So Gay" with it's clever quick fire lyrics sung with emotional exapseration ... & I love the horns & great production on this track. The production of the entire CD really brings out everything that Katy puts into the lyrics and music. Listen with your headphones to see what I mean.

It's an album which never runs out of energy or authenticity. "One of the Boys", "Thinking of You", "I'm Still Breathing" & "Mannequin" each has a story to tell both in words and music. Perry's energy & intuition flows through each song.

Not all may like her edgy delivery, but as a singer/songwriter, Katy nails it. Don't take her lyrics literally, they're more an exploration of emotions & ideas . . . though I do feel sorry for the guy with no penis.
