Free Music Review: Hamburger's Got the Beef

I agree with Tom Hamburger of England that this is an overlooked masterpiece and it's not just because I'm getting hungry and could use a Whopper. "Talk Is Cheap" doesn't come anywhere near the quality of this music. In fact, it reflects the problems The Stones ran into when the well ran dry, fumbling around with Muddy Waters riffs and other uninspired ideas. Richards' "Live at the Palladium" has a little more kick to some of the songs, but still nowhere near the power of "Main Offender."
There is just enough sleaze on "Main Offender" to offset its purer passions and religion. "Demon" is a hymn in the old Protestant tradition if there ever was one. And, whether it's G-chords or G-strings he's pulling off, Richards has soul rights and let's not complain. If hard-driving funk is a word, then enter it into the dictionary under Richards, Keith. Simplicity could be a problem, but it isn't because he's very focused here and less is so much more. Besides, the guy's obviously cracked and he might do something to you if you give him less than 5 stars.
Keith Richards IS NOT the Stones, though, not anymore than John Lennon WAS the Beatles. With the Stones, it seems like Richards provided more of the general sound and Mick Jagger provided the very necessary vocals, lyrics and compositions that made that sound extraordinary. And like Ringo, Charlie Watts HAD to be the drummer. Richards comes close on "Main Offender" but... no cigar -- he still would need a younger, hungrier Jagger to hit the old highs. But that not being possible, he's better off without the older, depleted Jagger muddying the waters. (Sorry.)
999 is also 1 less than 1000, so let's just add one and forget about the heroin factor. You don't need to be stoned to thoroughly enjoy this music.
