Free Music Notes for Defying GravityFree Music Review: Scary good Hit: 5 Stars
'Kiss a Girl' quickly caught my attention but for some reason (having never owned a Keith Urban CD before) I naively assumed that's about as good as it would get. How untrue could a notion be. This is an artist with unnerving musical capacity at his disposal and it shows on nearly every track. 'Hit the Ground Runnin'' is (to me) an aggressive little stinker (1 of 3 he didn't write or co-write) that perhaps belongs on some other recording, but that's a miniscule exception to the rich textures and deep soulfulness evident on fantastically great songs like 'If Ever I Could Love,' 'My Heart is Open,' and particularly ''Til Summer Comes Around,' all of which have exceeded my highest expectations. 'Sweet Thing' is absolutely glorious, even potentially explosive as it zips along at seemingly record speeds. Other artists have their moments, and Lady Antebellum are very promising, but this is clearly top of the market. I suppose Keith could always outdo himself, but this is such incredibly generous music, laced with pure honesty and so rich and pretty. Sales should go over the moon. I will be very surprised if they don't, over time, because it's pure love magic. The real kind, with all sorts of luscious transcendentals to ponder, and very strong magical energy. There is no exaggeration in that statement. Consecutive listens make the brain cycle through endless thoughts of nice soft love with a thousand different beautiful women including (or very much like) the overly delicious Salma Hayek, obviously due to all the langorous bass sliding, processed beats, chiming guitars, peppery little solos, resonant vocals (not unlike a cello), and all the incessant talk of love. Keith is at the very least an inadvertent magician, or perhaps he knows plenty well. Chicks certainly pine for precisely this level of attention, and you must give it to them. Just try playing this aural mango at low volumes to your little lady of the lake now and again. This is magic over which you should never be jealous, however. It's very much as if he came into your home and cooked up a fantastic multiple course dinner, then put it in the oven and kept it at a nice steady temperature for the two of you. All you have to do is take it out and eat. This can be empirically proven! Don't trust me, just check out the music, and be sure to crank it up, too, because it's incredible, almost frenetic with emotional intensity at times, and very beautiful. Thank you, Keith Urban, for producing one of the greatest CD's I've ever owned.
Free Music Review: Keith at his best. Hit: 5 Stars
In my review of Keith Urban's last album, 2006's 'Love, Pain And The Whole Crazy Thing', I complained that although there was the makings of a decent set, the excessive length of many of the tracks wore one down ultimately. Indeed, LPATWCT proved to be his least successful CD to date.
3 years later and 'Defying Gravity' redresses this completely. Running just under 15 minutes less that his last release, the whole thing is far tighter and of a much higher quality. The first 2 singles, 'Sweet Thing' and 'Kiss A Girl' have done really well in the charts and no wonder. Both are great pop/rock songs packed with hooks and show Urban at his best.
'Hit The Ground Runnin' and the Rick Nowels co-write 'Standing Right In Front Of You' are more of the same, the latter in particular having a great riff and reminding us what a briliant craftsman Nowels is.
Ballads 'Til Summer Comes Around' and 'My Heart Is Open' possibly slightly outstay their welcome but this is nitpicking as both songs are first rate really. Keith's only solo written tune, 'Why's It Feel So Long' is quirky and cute and the guy sure knows how to pen an addictive hook.
The only possible weak spot is another Nowels co-write, the closing 'Thank You', an ode to Urban's wife Nicole Kidman. It seems over-written and forced to me being literally 5 minutes of Urban grovelling to Nicole and ,indeed, thanking her to death. Perhaps I'm an old cynic but it seems like he's trying just a bit too hard. Nice melody, though.
So, that about wraps it up. DG is becoming my favourite album of his to date. It's one of those CDs that seems to grow on you the more you hear it, which doesn't happen as often as I'd like, and while his peak-selling 'Golden Road/Be Here' days may be gone, Urban should be really proud and invigorated by his achievements here.
Free Music Review: An Uplifting Album for Trying Times Hit: 5 Stars
Keith Urban is done it again! He never ceases to amaze with his songwriting skills, heartfelt vocals, and passionate guitar work. This time the theme of the CD is love. It's a really fun, upbeat kind of album, perfect for chasing the blues away on a bad day. It's an aural "happy pill" that the world needs right now in these trying times. "Hit the Ground Runnin'," a tune penned by Keiths' bassist Jerry Flowers is a rockin' tune that is most effective when cranked up at full volume. It showcases Jerry as not just a band member but a taletned songwriter in his own right. Keith made an excellent choise when he picked that song. "My Heart is Open" is another favorite about being brave enough despite past heartbreak to take a chance on love again. "Kiss a Girl," the current single, has a similar theme, but it's the kind of catchy tune you find yourself singing along to and tapping your fingers on the steering wheel when it comes on the radio in the car! "Thank You" is a very personal song, a confessional about his past struggles and a loving tribute to his wife. "Standing Right in Front of You" is another favorite, an uptempo song about a boy wishing the girl he sees every day would just notice him and make the first move. I could go on and on about this album, but you get the idea. Go out and buy it...you'll be glad you did! It's definitely going to be a fun CD to play in the summer, and it makes me even more excited to see how these songs come alive in concert.

Free Music Review: Keith Urban Defying Gravity Hit: 5 Stars
Keith Urban has such a remarkable voice. His talent shines through with every word he sings, and every note he strums on his guitar. The words roll off his tongue so clear and crisp, and you can't help but want to rush out and buy his album. He brings something new to the world of country music that no one has ever quite seen before.
His style of music is like nothing you've ever heard before. He's definitely not your average country singer. Instead of going on with a southern drawl, he has a much clearer voice. His songs are full of love, and passion, not bars and cars. Keith Urban has certainly taken things to the next level.
It's very surprising how incredible this country singer is considering he grew up in Australia. You don't even notice his accent when he's singing. His songs flow from his heart about where he is now with his marriage, daughter, and earlier days. Each song has a beautiful message within it.
If you haven't bought this album yet you need to. You wont regret it, and you'll probably be listening to him everyday for the next year. I can't wait until his next album comes out, because I'm sure it will be even better than this one. It will be hard to top Defying Gravity, but I'm sure he will.
