I have been a fan of his since he came out in 1999 with his debut disc "keith urban". Keith has a very strong voice, as well as being a great guitar player and songwriter. The first track, as well as first single, "Somebody Like You", is one of the finest on the disc. The song, co-written by Keith, is about falling in love with the perfect person and feeling self-empowerment because of that love: "I'm lettin' go of all my lonely yesterdays/I've forgiven myself for the mistakes I've made/Now there's just one thing, the only thing I wanna do/I wanna love somebody/Love somebody like you//Yeah I wanna feel the sunshine/Shining down on me and you/When you put your arms around me/You let me know there's nothing in this world/I can't do". Keith sounds so wonderful on this track and gets you psyched for the rest of the songs. The second track, and third single, also co-written by Keith, "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me", is another feel-good and empowering song. The songs says teaches us that even though we may not have a lot of good things, or luxuries, in life, the smallest things make you very lucky and blessed: "I got no money in my pockets/I got a hole in my jeans/I had a job and I lost it/But it won't get to me//And the sun is shinin'/This road keeps windin'/Through the prettiest country/From Georgia to Tennessee/And I got the one I love beside me/My troubles behind me/I'm alive and I'm free/Who wouldn't wanna be me". Track number three, "Whenever I Run", also co-written by Keith, talks about how instead of giving into pain, run to the people you love who will comfort you and lift you up: "Whenever I run/Instead of running into the blue/I follow my heart/And there in your arms/Is where I find the love I need/And the best is yet to come/Baby you're the one I run to". "What About Me", track four and another co-written by Keith, is another of the really great, inspirational songs on the disc. The song speaks of a person living in a society that continues to demand that he do things for everyone else and wants to know when he will get to do something or have some time for himself: "I'm livin' in a world that won't stop pullin' on me/I'm not complaining but it's true/It's like I owe my time to everyone else/Cause that's all I seem to do//Sometimes I can't help thinkin' what about me/Some days go by that I don't even see/Yeah I'm doing everything right and I can't break free/Oh is this the way it's always gonna be/What about me". "You'll Think Of Me", the fourth single and one of the few not co-written by Keith, is one of absolute favorites of the whole CD. He sings of his significant other leaving him for another man, but he will be all right and it is her that will be sorry: "I woke up early this morning around 4 am/With the moon shining bright as headlights on the interstate/I pulled the covers over my head and tried to catch some sleep/But thoughts of us kept keeping me awake/Ever since you found yourself in someone else's arms//Someday I'm gonna run across your mind/Don't worry I'll be fine/I'm gonna be alright//And you're gonna think of me". This is a great empowerment song for somebody going through a breakup. Track six, "Jeans On", copyright 1976 is another not co-written by Keith, is the absolute worst song on the whole CD. The song is very boring and seems to be a bit repetive: "When I wake up in the mornin' light/I pull on my jeans on and I feel all right/I pull my blue jeans on, I pull my old blue jeans on/I pull my blue jeans on, I pull my old blue jeans on". This song is definitely worth skipping, which I usually do. "You Look Good In My Shirt" is my second least favorite on the disc; however, the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you. It is a good song about being in love; however, it is so low on my list because it simply does not meet the standards of the others: "And maybe it's a little too early/To know if this is gonna work/All I know is you're sure looking/Good in my shirt". "You're Not Alone Tonight", written entirely by Keith, is somewhat of a religious-type song and very excellent, as well as inspirational. He sings of how even if there is no person around when you need to talk to someone after a bad day, God is always there with you to tell your troubles to, and he will listen: "We all have our days/When nothing goes as planned/Not a soul in the world/Seems to understand/And for someone to talk to/You'd give anything/Well go on and cry out loud/'Cause someone's listenin'//What matters most is never losin' faith/Cause it's gonna be alright/You're not alone tonight". This is another of my absolute favorites of the CD. Track nine, "You Won", co-written by Keith, is another good song about a guy trying so hard not to care about anything and a woman trying to change him, and she wins the competition in the end: "You built a bridge, I tore it down/I felt safe on shaky ground/And I was a master of despair/Making believe I didn't care//I shouldn't be standing here today/After all the crazy things I've done/I'm ready to fall and that's OK/I ran as far as I could run/You won". Track ten, "Song For Dad", is another of my absolute favorites and another entirely written by Keith. In the song he sings about how as he ages, he more he realizes how much his father loved his family, and he acknowledges that he is just like him: "The older I get/The more I can see/How much he loved my mother and my brother and me/And he did the best that he could/And I only hope when I have my own family/That everyday I see/A little more of my father in me//There were times I thought he was bein'/Just a little bit hard on me/But now I understand he was makin' me/Become the man he knew I could be/In everything he ever did/He always did with love/And I'm proud today to say I'm his son/When somebody says I hope I get to meet your dad/I just smile and say you already have". The last two lines I quoted are my favorite two lines of that song and get to me for some reason. "Raining On Sunday", the second single and the third not to be co-written by Keith, is a good song about being intimate with the person you love: "Pray that it's raining on Sunday/Stormin' like crazy/We'll hide under the covers all afternoon/Baby whatever comes Monday/Can take care of itself/Cause we got better things that we can do/When it's raining on Sunday". The final song and ninth to be co-written by Keith, "You're Not My God", is another religious song and another of the absolute best gems. The songs speaks about how God is the most important thing in life, not money like some people think and how having a lot of money can make you miserable: "It's just a piece of paper, it says, "In God We Trust"/A little sure felt good/But a lot was not enough/And everybody loved me when I was on a roll/And I thought I had everything/When I held the gold//But you're not my God/And you're not my friend/You're not the one that I will walk with in the end/You're not the truth/You're a temporary shot/You ruin people's lives and you don't give a second thought/You're not my God". I love this last song so much because it is so true. People need to worry about having God more than anything else in the world. One day, when we die, everything on the earth will be gone, and we won't have the money, or any other material items any more; however, if you love God and spent your time worshipping him, you will live forever in Heaven with God. If you don't love him or serve him, you won't get any of Heaven's treasures. I wish people would listen to this song, give it their complete attention, and take the message to heart. Overall, this is one of the best CDs of 2002 and should have won more awards, because it and Keith are genius. Highly recommended!
