Free Music Review: Urban sets the bar high and clears it!
Hit: 5 Stars

With success comes pressure to keep the good stuff coming, and if you're Keith Urban, you know about pressure. It's bound to come from somewhere when you've sold eight million records in seven years, had 14 top ten and six #1 singles and won a Grammy. Fortunately, it seems that Urban works well under pressure, and falling in love with and marrying Nicole Kidman inspires some wonderful new songs.

This album finds Urban in a whole new place. There are songs about pain, but instead of being dark and regretful, they seem to say "I was in pain, but now I'm not. I'm moving on with my life." "Used To The Pain" says it best.

"Every step I take I get a little less afraid
Of givin' in to love
Believe me when I say it gets better every day
Once you get used to the pain."

This is perhaps his most upbeat record. Nicole has definitely changed his way of thinking and is giving him new reasons to write. Love is always a dominating theme on his records, but longtime listeners will be able to sense the difference she has made. The boy is in love!

We are treated to more glorious guitar work on this one, but this album is so diverse and textured that the production alone sucks you in, and Urban's vocals keep you in. There's a reason this guy has won CMA Male Vocalist of the Year three years in a row: He puts all of his emotions in his vocals and doesn't hold back.

Every song is single worthy, but highlights include "Shine", "I Told You So", "Faster Car", "Raise The Barn", and "Tu Compania". "I Told You So" features a pounding rhythm and many layers of percussion including a tin whistle and uillean pipes that give it a celtic flair. It will knock your socks off. "Faster Car" was surely written while he and Nicole were first dating. It is insanely infectious and to poised to be a big hit. It is the furthest thing from country I've ever heard him do, but it's one of the best. It has a killer base line, which Urban plays, and sounds like something U2 would do.

"I need a faster car now
I'm a rocket man in love with you."

"You got me talkin' to an empty pillow in the middle of the night
I ain't slept in quite a while."

I am so sorry that all the people buying it outside the United States don't get to hear "Raise The Barn", because it is one of his best songs. It was inspired by Hurricane Katrina, but it is so upbeat and praises the spirits of all our brothers and sisters in the Gulf Coast who are rebuilding their lives, and having Ronnie Dunn as a duet partner is always a good thing. Dunn's and Urban's voices are a good pair, the two best tenors in Nashville, and Dunn delivers another fantastic vocal. Even though it references Hurricane Katrina, it's a great party song and everybody should hear it.

"We'll be square dancin', toe tappin'
We'll be kickin' up our heels to the Cotton Eyed Joe
Music and laughter, gonna raise the rafters
A little boot slidin' across the floor
Do a little hand holdin', hay rollin'
Strollin' with your honey by your side
Dixie cups and paper plates
Fiddle tunes and Amazing Grace
Hallelujah gonna raise the barn tonight."

This was definitely worth the wait to see what he had up his sleeve, and I can't wait to see him perform some of this new stuff live. This new music is so fresh and invigorating, like sunshine after a long cold winter. Urban is awfully good at bringing the sun with him wherever he goes, and this is no exception.

Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing Poster

Limited Edition enhanced Japanese pressing of the 2006 release from the Country superstar (AKA Mr. Nicole Kidman) features one bonus track ('Got To Let It Go') plus the enhanced video for 'Once In A Lifetime'. Grammy Award winner and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Keith Urban has completed the follow-up to his nearly four times platinum third album Be Here. Toshiba EMI.
It's tempting to read these songs--many about hope in the face of potential heartbreak--as an adjunct to Keith Urban's own tabloid-fodder life, which lately reads "ex-junkie country star marries Nicole Kidman, enters rehab." But his three previous albums have similar dark undertones. That would also be an underestimation of Urban's creative powers, which are broad enough to balance assembly-line Nashville pop with emotionally fine-tuned artistry. Breezy rockers like "Faster Car," sweet hooky ballads like "Shine," and readymade big-chorus hits like "Once in a Lifetime" rub elbows with more complex numbers like "I Can't Stop Loving You"--an essay about sad courage that starts with an acoustic guitar and adds instrumental textures as it unfolds--and "Stupid Boy," a tale of loss and self-discovery. It's no coincidence that both those songs climax with Urban's own crying guitar solos. As a player, his bold, midrange-heavy tone complements his most nuanced vocal performances. Another highlight is "Raise the Barn," which Urban co-wrote and sings with Ronnie Dunn. The cheerful tune, inspired by the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, is a tribute to the durability of the human spirit--a subject Urban seems to know more than a little about. --Ted Drozdowski
